One thing I’d like to point out is that there have been a few instances where filmmakers with one successful musical under their belt end up doing another one, yet the follow-up doesn’t end up being as successful. In 1973, Norman Jewison followed-up Fiddler on the Roof with Jesus Christ Superstar. While the latter film was a commercial success given its $3,500,000 budget, it still wasn’t as well received critically. In 2009, Rob Marshall followed-up Chicago with Nine, which turned out to be a big disappointment all around. In 2012, Adam Shankman followed-up Hairspray with Rock of Ages, which flopped at the box office.
Could Tom Hooper end up following a similar outcome? Or could he pull a Robert Wise and prove to be successful with movie musicals?
Looking back at this now, it is definitely former, which shouldn’t be that surprising.December 28, 2019 at 8:14 pm #1203252916
Ok, I just finished this show. It is not as bad as y’all make it out to be. The visuals are awkward and the cats look weird af, but I get the story.
It’s not a favorite movie of mine but definitely not one of the worst. Hated the songs at the beginning but once the Jellicle Ball got started, the flow was a bit better.
I just love movies. And awards.December 29, 2019 at 1:11 pm #1203253431
I just watched.
It wasn’t that bad.
The CGI didn’t matter to me. I watched the trailer so I already had seen the visuals aspect…
It isn’t that bad. It’s too long. It has too many songs. But it’s enjoyable, pure entertainment.
Jennifer Hudson is the MVP. And Taylor is a surprise.
It’s not one of the best movies of the year, but it shouldn’t also be in the worst list.
EDIT: Did u notice that every single one of the movie that Taylor is involved always does bad with the critics? Valentine’s Day, Cats, The Giver, Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Lorax and now Cats.

Darlings, Thatcher cried.

Finally saw this yesterday. It’s terrible, too long, too many songs and Hooper and Hall did shit with that screenplay, they didn’t even add one line of dialog, they just set scenes up and copy pasted lyrics and done.
It does have a plot, of course it does, but there’s no explanation for anything and the songs from the first half are so lame that if any explanation was given in those lyrics, it’s not easy to follow because the songs are annoying and badly directed.
But once the first part of Memory comes along, followed by Swift’s actually good song, Mr Mistofeles or whatever, then Taylor’s actual number (nice song, she wasn’t that good) and then Memory again, it makes for a nice bunch of sequences. So it’s not all lost, mainly because this group of songs are actually good and are not as Cats-y as the first half. But again, some actual story and dialog would’ve been great here too.
But that’s it. The rest of the 2 hour movie is a huge mess of bad decisions and some Razzie worthy work by Idris Elba and a special Razzie is also needed for whoever decided to make his character one plain color. It was uncomfortable as fuck to watch. He was the only person who looked like he had an actual cat suit.
MVPs: Dench, Hayward, McKellen and Hudson. They did what they could.
To give them credit, honestly, Dark Phoenix and Serenity are worse films and I would even go to see this again instead of The Lion King.
It’s sad. A missed opportunity. There’s a lot here to work with, Hooper completely fucked this up.January 7, 2020 at 11:21 pm #1203270009
Finally caught this yesterday evening. It really isn’t that bad. Critics scathing this while praising bore-fest The Souvenir and ‘shout fuck for 2 hours’ Uncut Gems…
*insert Laurie Metcalf ‘it makes me laugh’ gif*
The effects aren’t the best, and there are loads of filler songs, but by the end it kind of pulls it together in its oddness. Jennifer Hudson is the MVP, a lot of the cast are on for one number then done – but that’s the stage musical (I believe).
For sure a future cult classic with screenings for audiences to revel in for years to come.

You must seek this out, to find out if such a thing exists. One person insists there is such a thing:
“A VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November to finish some of the 400 effects shots in @catsmovie. His entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats.”
#releasethebuttholecut! 😀 😀 😀 😀March 20, 2020 at 4:13 am #1203387894
WTF !!! Who in their right mind asked them to insert CGI buttholes in the first place. Just when you thought Cats couldn’t get worse… The person who had that idea should just change professions.April 28, 2020 at 4:46 am #1203451077

Then who cares? It would’ve been much better if she had actually seen it. Then she would really have A LOT of good/bitchy/funny things to say.April 29, 2020 at 9:30 pm #1203454514This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 30, 2020 at 8:34 pm #1203456599
No she’s not. She’s a beloved legend.
