Disney has officially delayed Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story by almost a whole year. It will now be released on December 10th, 2021 (which will be almost 2 months after the 1961 classic celebrates its 60th anniversary). https://variety.com/2020/film/news/black-widow-west-side-story-eternals-release-date-delay-1234773491/

    Well, shit.

Delayed by a year after a messy production? I don’t see much hope.

Well at least this gives them time to potentially recast Elgort.

    Fuck the Grammys

I don’t recall hearing anything about the production itself being messy, just that there was the Elgort controversy.

    It makes sense.
Waiting for an entire year, until the pandemic ends.
They clearly want this to be a successful hit.

WSS vs In the Heights: Round 2

I still have my doubts about the new West Side Story being much of a major awards contender. Despite a couple of recent retellings like A Star is Born and Little Women receiving Best Picture nominations, they were still punished a bit by the industry because they were stories people have seen on film countless times before. With West Side Story in particular, the 1961 version not only swept the Oscars, but it’s still considered an all time classic to this day. You also have a number of people questioning whether or not a reboot even feels necessary. Plus, if Emily Blunt couldn’t get nominated for taking on a character that previously won Julie Andrews an Oscar, I doubt Ariana DeBose is going to do so following in the footsteps of Rita Moreno no matter how good she’ll end up being.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ariana DeBose discusses both of her upcoming movie musicals (including West Side Story).

DeBose says Spielberg’s West Side Story diverges from the 1961 film in the depths in which it explores the lives of its Puerto Rican characters. “The movie gives you more insight into what was really going on in the Puerto Rican community at that time,” DeBose says. “That was something you understood on a surface level in the original film. We probably have over 30 new Latinx actors who are going to be introduced through this film. It was an opportunity to celebrate the culture and our love of dance, but also get into these social issues.”

I can’t help but feel like they still haven’t provided any reason to do this remake other than simply fixing the casting issues of the original. And while that’s a noble aim, fixing one problem with a movie is not enough of a justification to remake it, imo. You need to have something new you want to do with it, a new take. I feel like this is more likely than not to fall flat.

They’ve mentioned more changes than just the correct ethnicities though, as they’ve talked about how this will stray closer to the theatrical version rather than the altered cinematic one, and it’s going to be changed to have a more film like look in contrast with the stage like atmosphere of the original.

I don’t think they’d hire Tony Kushner to write this if they were just gonna do the same thing as last time.

As Matt Neglia said on Next Best Picture’s recent podcast review of the Ben Wheatley-directed film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, if a film won the Oscar for Best Picture, then it should never be remade nor rebooted. Even the 2004 version of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days was seen as inferior to the 1956 version, and the latter is considered to be one of the worst movies to have ever won Best Picture. In response to correcting certain aspects of an older film that is nowadays seen as problematic, if the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, then the movie itself should be left alone warts and all.
