Looks fun. DeBose looks good and stood out the most to me in the trailer. With that said, the accents seem extremely exaggerated. It’s quite distracting. We’ll see.

Can you imagine if they had chosen a Puerto Rican actress to play a Puerto Rican character? It would have been really crazy.
I understand that in the 1960’s it was something complicated, but today the accent issue is a very serious characterization error, especially in a film with so much “racial conflict”. Bernardo’s role is the only one that looks like a Puerto Rican immigrant lol

Come on, the trailer is not bad, but I wanted to hear more singing.
DeBose said one sentence, so chill out, everyone.
No one stood out acting-wise to me, which is not a good sign.

It looks like Disney/Spielberg stripped keys for a promo wagon from Ansel, and instead are now focused on making Rachel Zegler the breakout star. Which is a decided difference from over a year ago, when WSS was teased with pics and clips of Ansel.

Rachel’s got some serious push going for her, because she was at the Met gala before her first film is even out, and she also recently got a Town & Country cover.

Maria and her family are the main focus of the film, heck they even gave Riff good few moments in the trailer. I don’t mind it personally, since I do think the young cast deserves some love, and hopefully some of their film careers take off as a result of the film.

The accents are atrocious and borderline offensive. Overall, this looks quite ugly with that green coloring and Spielberg’s lack of originality is showing with those reused shots.

I freaking love the trailer. I wanted to hate it but simply could not.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Ansel Elgort’s unproven rape allegations from last year…

They’ve got Sondheim’s endorsement on Colbert last night. It seems like they’ll be able to microtarget this to a very specific but still sizable slice of Academy voter.

This flopping hard will be a great early Christmas present.

As I previously mentioned in another thread, I don’t see this being a huge box office hit. Maybe a modest one at best. Although there are bigger tentpole films opening in December such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix: Resurrections. Of course, we don’t even know what COVID cases will look like by then.

On the most recent episode of the Next Best Picture podcast (where they discussed the latest trailer), Matt Neglia went on to further elaborate why he personally thinks any movie that wins the Oscar for Best Picture should never be redone at all. He believes that they should instead just serve as a time capsule where people look back at them, take lessons from whatever aspects that might’ve been deemed problematic (which in West Side Story‘s case, was the fact that a lot of the Puerto Rican characters were played by white performers), and use those as a way to do better with new stories moving forward as opposed to redoing old ones. Not to mention that one of the NBP members, Dan Bayer, also brought up how given the controversy In the Heights received a few months ago, if we could see similar backlash to West Side Story given that a number of the actors playing the Puerto Rican characters aren’t actually Puerto Rican (despite them at least being Hispanic).

The fact that it’s a remake of a Best Picture winner is something I’m very mixed on as a viewer first and foremost. I do kind of agree with his sentiments, but a large part of that is that the remakes of Best Picture winners that do exist have all been terrible; just look at the Rebecca remake last year. But then again – it’s SPIELBERG. Even if most of his recent movies have been more around the “good” range rather than the “masterpiece” range, he still maintains such a consistent level of quality that it’s kind of baffling to think this will be a complete dud; even by his own admission The Lost World: Jurassic Park is probably the only movie of his that, in modern times, is generally seen in more of a negative light than a positive one.

Also, this movie shouldn’t suffer what In the Heights did. That movie didn’t have a nationality problem, it has a race/colorism problem, as the story heavily features the Hispanic community of Washington Heights that Lin-Manuel Miranda grew up in, but at the same time belied the large African American community that lives there. I can see why some Puerto Ricans might have A problem with it, but it will probably only happen when the movie comes out.

Am I the only one who loves the trailers for this movie?

Are we underestimating David Alvarez for a Best Supporting Actor nomination? Also: is he the same David Alvarez who won a Tony award for Billy Elliott? (one of the three Billy’s).

I think there is too much competition in Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose but I could be wrong about her – I just think there are about 12 actresses viable in that category and I don’t see her getting in to the top five.

The movie looks to me to have superb camera work and editing and direction. (Based on the trailers, which until you see the full movie is all we can speculate on).

Have we seen the same trailers? We will have to agree to disagree! The ones I saw looked amazing! The accents were excellent. Sometimes I think people just want to be negative about everything for their own personal reasons.
