Are we underestimating David Alvarez for a Best Supporting Actor nomination? Also: is he the same David Alvarez who won a Tony Award for Billy Elliot? (one of the three Billy’s).
Yes, he is one of the three actors who originated the title role in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot. No, I don’t think he’s going to be Oscar nominated for two reasons:
1. The whole ‘slap the stud’ syndrome as the Academy by and large doesn’t usually like to award 20-something year old men.
2. Pretty much the same reason why I don’t think Ariana DeBose will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress. His character previously won George Chakiris an Oscar for the 1961 version, and we rarely see the same roles nominated at the Academy Awards more than once (especially if it’s by a different performer taking on one that had been awarded before).
