I was the same. I was hesitant at first. But I love it and wish it was doing better at the box office. I highly recommend it to anyone who has yet to see it.

I was skeptical to say the least. Could not understand why people were giving so much buzz to Ariana DeBose in particular. I didn’t think Spielberg would be able to do a big musical. Boy was I ever wrong! This is my favorite movie of 2021, the best movie of 2021, and for me it is now my all-time favorite movie musical! I love everything about it and have seen it SIX times! I would nominate it in 13 categories for a total of 14 nominations and I insist that Justin Peck ought to win a special Oscar for his choreography! And it’s my #1 in eleven categories. (I am not going to enjoy Dune winning Oscars that West Side Story deserves).

During the first watch I was focused on the techs, the incredible crafts of the movie… during the second I got so emotional and wept like a baby during the A Boy Like That scene.

I’d be deserving of wins in Picture, Director (but I’m super fine with Jane as well!), Costumes, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing and Mixing, Editing.

    Jodie Comer supremacy

For those who keep thinking West Side Story could win Best Picture, let me remind you all of this post I made almost a month ago.

Although Matt Neglia brought up an interesting point on a recent Next Best Picture podcast. He thinks what could make West Side Story vulnerable is that if it were to win Best Picture, that could potentially encourage filmmakers/studio executives to want to make new film adaptations of Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, or The Godfather.

Jeffrey that is ridiculous! What do you have against this amazing movie? It is a million times better than the 1961 version. West Side Story can win – will it? It’s only obstacle is that the critics have people hoodwinked into thinking that they have to vote for The Power of the Dog. Look, if they honestly think Dog is the best film, fine, I couldn’t disagree more, but make it an HONEST vote, and don’t be lead by dopey film critics who won’t acknowledge the brilliance of this version of West Side Story. In every single aspect of film-making West Side Story is the best film of 2021, and personally I think it should sweep and win 11 Academy Awards plus a special Oscar for Justin Peck’s superb choreography.

I have nothing against this version at all. I gave it a good review. How good it is and how it compares to the 1961 version is all purely subjective. Although a friend of mine who happens to be friends with Tariq Kahn told me that while Tariq enjoyed Spielberg’s adaptation and thought it was well made, he didn’t think it did anything the 1961 movie didn’t. Of course, that is just Tariq’s opinion.

Although my main point here is that if West Side Story were to win the Oscar, that could potentially encourage filmmakers/studio executives into thinking it’s OK to redo a classic story even if it already has a movie which happens to be this much lauded Best Picture winner.

Why would that be so awful? A new version of Lawrence of Arabia with a different emphasis and a different point of view might be fascinating – or it might be awful – that’s always a possibility. I personally would love a new version of The Color Purple by a female black director (I know we are getting a musical version but I mean a remake of Alice Walker’s novel).

A new version of Gone With the Wind that challenges the racism would be interesting.

I am not opposed to remakes. Dune is a remake, granted it’s not an Oscar winning film.

I would hope that academy members will just look at the merits of this version and vote for it based on it’s brilliance as a movie in 2021.

Do you have some FYC banner for the movie, did they make it to push WSS in the awards conversation?

I am listening to the original soundtrack recording of the 2021 West Side Story and it is sheer heaven! If only they still had the Scoring – Adaptation category in the Oscars it would win easily! Everything about the music is done to perfection! And listening to the 21 tracks brings back the scenes from the movie vividly into my mind (well, I have seen it 6 times so far!)

I have been loving coming on to Golddderby and seeing the FYC ads for West Side Story!!!

I have persuaded a few friends and family members to see it and they of course love it! But a few of my friends and family have said that they are waiting for the covid surge to subside before they see it. They want to see it but are afraid to go to the movies right now – this has been particularly true of those I know over 50 years old, which of course are the people who I suspect would most love this movie – not that younger people wouldn’t love it too if they gave it a chance.

Sure, winning an Oscar can encourage that, but WSS’ box office result may just as well discourage it. Just my three cents.

West Side Story is going to win BP by default as those two supposed front runners are weak…Belfast is lightweight and much ado about nothing, while the Dawg is very divisive and is going to be tripped up by the pref ballot

Moreover, WSS appeals specifically to an older age group; exactly the type who make up most of the academy voters

I hope you are right but I have to say this: if it wins it will DESERVE to win! Every single scene is superb. Every single performance is superb. Every single musical number works. The rumble is actually terrifying, as it should be. It is the best adaptation of a Broadway musical I have ever seen. Spielberg’s direction is perfect.

Not only does WSS deserve to win BP, Spielberg deserves to win BD for that achievement … if Campion were a man do you even think she’d be the favourite to win BD ? Just look at what Spielberg had to do to hold that movie together and then compare it to Campion’s low budget movie… how many cast members are there in the movie ? It looks like something that a bunch of film students would come up with on a very limited budget

Spielberg is at the very pinnacle of his career and I doubt there’s any living Director could create a magnificent movie .. Campion is a dwarf in comparison to such a living legend
