The season for Best Animated Feature is kicking off this weekend with Pixar’s latest, ONWARD. This film had me skeptical from the trailer, as it doesn’t “look” like Pixar, and its March release date doesn’t follow the traditional Pixar-path, but here we are.
I caught an advanced screening last night, and after going in with expectations it would be a B-level Pixar film, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the film. And B-level Pixar is accurate, but that doesn’t mean its bad.
What worked- Pixar’s ability to to add such emotional pathos into a “children’s” story never ceases to amaze me. I teared-up several times throughout the film. The voicework from Pratt and Holland was exceptional as well, and I’ll add to my case that Holland NEEDS cast in a coming-of-age drama IMMEDIATELY! The story is simple, and from the trailer I thought it might be too goofy, but it works really well in the context of the world it takes place in.
The film offers a great lesson to kids, and adults, and I think this could be a hit at the box office if word-of-mouth is positive. It’s an easy film for both parents and kids to enjoy.
Onward even from the mere look doesn’t feel like a Pixar movie. I feel like Pixar knows at this point in their life they can get away with releasing a more disposable mid-tier movie people won’t remember much.
