Here are mine, what is yours?

    1. Greta Gerwig for lady Bird. Excellent solid work by a first-time full length feature directing effort. She creates her world, utilizes a fantastic ensemble and has a wonderful film that is both comedic and dramatic!

    2. Christopher Nolan for Dunkirk. What I don’t like about Dunkirk is the lack of any character development. It tells its story well with the exception of one very confusing sequence when the young men were in the boat. This is a towering technical acheivement and very enjoyable work.

    3. Paul Thomas Anderson for Phantom Thread. My problem with this film was the unlikability of the characters but it was technically proficient and very well directed.

    4. Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape Of Water. What is infuriating is how mixed this movie is: superb brilliant sequences followed by inane insipid ones. I did not care for the cartoon villains and the cold war villainy. I loved Sally and Richard and their scenes throughout the movie.

    5. Jordan Peele for Get Out. I just didn’t get this movie, didn’t enjoy it. Just not my cup of tea.

I vastly preferred Sean Baker, Robin Campillo, Luca Guadagnino, Steven Spielberg and Agnes Varda and JR. Disappointed they didn’t go “maverick” and nominate Baker, but they did go maverick with Anderson and snubbed McDonagh.

Honestly, I think they’re all really strong but I don’t think Jordan Peele should be in there. I would’ve much preferred to see Luca Gudagnino or Denis Villeneuve get in.

    2. del Toro

Although for me Shape is a much better film than Dunkirk (lack emotions and heart), when it comes to directing, i must say Nolan’s work is more showy than del Toro. Still happy if del Toro win, though.
