While I do like “No Time to Die” (the production is very atmospheric and the lyrics quite clever) and it’s certainly one of the better tunes to come out of the James Bond franchise, I find the vocals to be the weakest aspect. I get that this is Billie’s distinct style (and I’ve warmed up to it with time even though it’s never really been my cup of tea) but, when left as is, the song quickly becomes forgettable. One common denominator underlining both Adele’s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” is the powerful vocals. That’s what really set these songs apart from the competition in the years they won their Oscars. Listening to “No Time to Die” always leaves me waiting for that cathartic vocal moment that never comes to fruition. I guess I just find it baffling that, despite its flaws, this song has been the Oscar frontrunner for so long (and the default choice of countless awards already) especially when there are other competitive options also in the running and equally deserving of a win.

There’s always at least 2 picture nominees that make sound.

There’s always at least 2 sound nominees that make score.

That means, in addition to Dune, either The Power of the Dog is getting both Score and Sound nominations or No Time to Die is.

They’re the only three movies on both the Score and Sound shortlists.

I agree. If the Music Branch will analyze the song and it will correspond to the film’s plot/story, it’s a sure fire will get nominated. It was already posted over Instagram and I love it.

“We don’t talk about Bruno” is the #1 song in the US after reaching the top of Billboard Hot 100.

This would have won the Oscar easily

Fuck you Disney for submitting the wrong song!!!!

I love “we dont talk about Bruno” but I think “Dos oruguitas” has more feeling.

And being “number1” is not really enough to win an oscar…

You don’t have to go #1 to win an Oscar, but in the specific case of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (being culturally relevant during voting, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s EGOT narrative), it’d make a huge difference. It’s not a “bad song” like, erm, “Can’t Stop The Feeling”. That one wouldn’t have gotten nominated if the solo/radio/single version wasn’t one of the biggest hits of 2017. I can’t mention “Happy” because it only peaked commercially after the Oscars.

The general public has been talking about Bruno, and saying good things about him.

With all the talk of “Bruno” going #1, it’s easy to overlook that “Dos Oruguitas” is #36 on the Hot 100 this week as well.

Assuming both “Dos Oruguitas” and “No Time to Die” are nominated, that will be the only third time this century that two of the eventual Best Song nominees reached the Hot 100 Top 40, prior to the nominations being announced

2013 – “Let It Go” and “Happy”*
2018 – “All the Stars” and “Shallow”
2021 – “No Time to Die” and “Dos Oruguitas”

    What’s funny about “Dos Oruguitas”
and “NTTD”, is that both represent the 2021 film year and neither had actually charted in the top 40 during the 2021 calendar year.

    * “Happy” in it’s third charting week reached #25 on the chart published literally the day before the nominations were announced. Both the Demi & Idina versions of “Let It Go” had already been in the top 40 since the films November premiere.

I think Encanto is peaking at the right time, its main competition is 1000 years old

    it might actually win it

Encanto being new has allowed it to win approximately 0 critics awards thus far.

No Time To Die being old has caused it to lose approximately 1 critics awards thus far.

    Very difficult choice.
