Who are some people who lost major Oscars, but won in another category the same year, possibly as a consolation prize? For this list, I only included instances where the Oscar winner was also nominated that year in a more prestigious category, which may have resulted in a possible incentive for voters to check their name off in the lesser category.

Some examples I can think of:

1938 – Fay Bainter wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Jezebel), but loses Best Lead Actress (White Banners)

1942 – Teresa Wright wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Mrs. Miniver), but loses Best Lead Actress (The Pride of the Yankees)

1944 – Barry Fitzgerald wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (Going My Way), but loses Best Lead Actor (for the same film!)

1968 – Stanley Kubrick wins Oscar for Best Visual Effects (2001: A Space Odyssey), but loses Best Director and Best Original Screenplay

1982 – Jessica Lange wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Tootsie), but loses Best Lead Actress (Frances).

1992 – Neil Jordan wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (The Crying Game), but loses Best Director

1994 – Quentin Tarantino wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (Pulp Fiction), but loses Best Director

1996 – Joel and Ethan Coen win Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (Fargo), but lose for Best Director and Best Picture, respectively

2017 – Jordan Peele wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (Get Out), but loses Best Director and Best Picture

2018 – Spike Lee wins Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (BlacKkKlansman), but loses Best Director and Best Picture

2018 – Lady Gaga wins Oscar for Best Original Song (A Star Is Born), but loses Best Actress

From what I’ve seen I think these were deserved:
    .Lady Gaga in 2018
    .Quentin Tarantino in 1994
    .Stanley Kubrick in 1968

    These I don’t agree with
    .Spike Lee in 2018
Should have won instead : A Star Is Born

.Jordan Peele in 2017 (I’m actually partial with this one)
Could have also won : Three Billboards

.Jessica Lange in 1982 (Should have won lead)
Should have won : Kim Stanley

    .Fay Bantier in 1938
Should have won : Margaret Lindsay, who wasn’t even nominated.

Jane Campion for The Piano screenplay instead of director

George Clooney started off his Supporting Actor acceptance speech by joking I guess this means I’m not winning director.

Jordan Peele won because it’s a great screenplay. It’s not to make up for his director loss. He probably came fourth that year. If any thing, Barry Jenkins and Steve McQueen seems more plausible, but I doubt they were that close second either.

Right now, the most plausible case of consolation win in the same year I can think of is Jessica Lange. She gave a marvelous leading performance in Frances that year and should have won or at least tied with Meryl in also one of her finest performances. It’s shame that she won for Tootsie because she gave an average performance in that film and I actually prefer anyone else out of the other 4 to win against her.
