I find these performances very interesting. All of them appear for very brief screentime, but manages to get a nomination. Do you have watched all of these brief ‘supporting’ performances?
Hermione Baddeley (Room at the Top) – 2:19
Ethel Barrymore (The Paradine Case) – 3:52
Claire Trevor (Dead End) – 4:22
Maria Ouspenskaya (Dodsworth) – 4:57
Beatrice Straight (Network) – 5:02
Jane Alexander (All the President’s Men) – 5:09
Sylvia Miles (Midnight Cowboy) – 5:19
Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) – 5:52
Ned Beatty (Network) – 6:00
Carolyn Jones (The Bachelor Party) – 6:01
John Marley (Love Story) – 6:03
Geraldine Page (The Pope of Greenwich Village) – 6:06
Basil Rathbone (Romeo and Juliet) – 6:16
John Lithgow (Terms of Endearment) – 6:28
Maximilian Schell (Julia) – 6:49
I hope the Oscars will recognize more brief, small role in the future.

May 24, 2021 at 1:14 pm #1204269455I honestly love performances like these that come in and steal their brief scenes from their costars. The academy needs to crack down on studios submitting the likes of Rooney Mara (Carol) and Viola Davis (Fences) in the wrong category, so that hopefully we do see more interesting choices for less famous “character actors” to get nominated.

I still think Baddeley’s nomination is very interesting, but I do have to agree that shorter performances should be more prevalent in the Supporting category these days.
Someone like Paul Raci having 18 minutes of screen time should more like the average rather than those who are almost equal to those who are lead in their films.

That’s been over. Never again.

Yes! Out of all of the relatively brief performances I’ve seen, she was easily the most memorable.
