Joaquin Phoenix is hot for his performance as a person with mental illness in the film Joker. He’s in the conversation for awards and likely to get Oscar nomination. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I will later on.
I was just wondering, who else get nominated at the Oscars for having a role of deranged or having mental illness? I can only think of Kathy Bates in Misery, Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane or Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook (if you consider him.) Who else?October 13, 2019 at 8:19 pm #1203135142

Recently Natalie Portman in Black Swan, Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine, Julianne Moore in Still Alice, Marion Cotillard in Two Days, One Night, etc.
Cotillard was only having a career crisis that affect her family life and Moore has advanced illness but not related to being deranged. I don’t think so.October 13, 2019 at 8:57 pm #1203135183

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (deranged)
borderline but definitely not the brightest star in the sky
temporarily out of it
A Streetcar Named Desire
Comeback Little Sheba
The Bad Seed
The Three Faces of Eve
Diary of a Mad Housewife
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Wild at Heart
Silence of the Lambs
Robert De Niro
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
The Madness of King George
Billy Bob Thornton
Shadow of The Vampire
A Beautiful Mind
The Last King of Scotland
Jackie Earle Haley
Notes on a Scandal
Not comfortable calling some of them deranged and left out some borderline ones, but it appears that playing them pays dividends.

I’m sorry but how has Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine not been mentioned yet? She is profoundly deluded, depressed, has an extreme anxiety disorder, and is addicted to alcohol and Xanax. Not to mention, she talks to herself and needed electroconvulsive shock therapy.
