Who will be the Lakeith type shock this year? Like an ‘isn’t even in the conversation/on the predictions list’ type shock?
Not necessarily your wishful thinking noms, but who might realistically get in that no-one was predicting?
Mine is probably The Last Duel showing up in a couple of non-technical categories (screenplay, picture, director or even supporting actress).

I really think there’s going to be a shock in best actress. It feels like such a wide open race and each of the frontrunners in that category (sans Gaga) feel like they have their own strikes against them.
I’ve never had Jessica Chastain in my best actress predictions because whilst she’ll get plenty of number one votes, I just question whether many academy members have even seen this film. She’s of course a well liked actress and the performance is baity so it wouldn’t surprise me if she did turn up on nominations day but she feels like an also ran in this category and this is a film that I anticipate has a lot of passionate supporters from certain demographics whilst also having a lot of apathy from quite a few other demographics (televangelism isn’t a big thing in many countries outside of North and South America).
But then I also find it difficult to figure who to put in her place. The thought of Stewart being the Ruth Negga to her Amy Adams is tempting but I’m not predicting in order not to get my hopes up. The thought of Emilia Jones coat-tailing to CODA is also tempting but I’m not too confident CODA is strong enough a contender for that to happen. Ditto with Rachel Zegler (although she has had a lot more visibility during the voting period). Pre BAFTA I was predicting The Tragedy of Macbeth to absolutely explode and thus predicting McDormand to get carried along (she is well loved and Lady Macbeth is a meaty role) but then the film under-performed at BAFTA so I dropped her and am not really sure what to make of it in Picture. Then after the BAFTA nominations I slotted in Renate Reinsve – not because of the BAFTA nominations but rather because I wondered if she was actually one of the membership 12 in her category and because The Worst Person in the World had attracted a lot of support in the voting period so I wondered if it was being sought out in the industry. But I’m too much of a coward to predict her so I’ve now defaulted to Cruz because she feels like a go between Chastain and Reinsve. She has a similar industry profile to Chastain but she’s also in a film that holds a lot of international appeal and seemed to be attracting a lot of support at the right time.

There was a blurb that a lot of people voted this year, higher than normal. So that’s probably because they wanna make sure something that normally would not get in gets in this time around. It was apparently something beloved across 80 countries or so. So in conclusion, Spiderman for Best Picture.
If that’s too crazy of an answer, then I say Judi Dench for Belfast. She hasn’t turned up anywhere and could be in if the film is really strong for voters.

February 7, 2022 at 9:33 am #1204782421Macbeth overperforming and getting into best picture would be nice!
But a surprise in best actress is more likely and it could be anyone. Three of those spots are up for grabs. The only surpring snubs would be Kidman or Gaga.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 7, 2022 at 9:45 am #1204782512It will never happen but I’d love it if Martha Plimpton received a surprise nomination.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 7, 2022 at 10:10 am #1204782613I would love for Joanna Scanlan to get nominated for Best Actress with After Love.
I’m getting a feeling Andrew Garfield might get snubbed but I could be wrong………..
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 7, 2022 at 10:13 am #1204782622The most shocking snub of all would be Lady Gaga missing in Best Actress, just because she is currently considered the front runner and is the only leading actress who has hit every pre-cursor + trifecta. It would be very shocking and one of the biggest snubs in AMPAS history.
Any of the others missing in Best Actress would not be as shocking.

She’s sadly not eligible for the Oscars.

Why not?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 7, 2022 at 10:41 am #1204782741I’m dreading it, but I feel like Garfield will get snubbed. I desperately hope I’m wrong.
And Dunst.
People will run around saying Stewart got snubbed, but I would actually be shocked if she gets in.
