Major surprise that would make happy would be Tessa Thompson but I don’t see it happening. Watch best actress be totally predictable and boring  after all the debates of who fifth would be.

I don’t think we’re likely to have a Lakeith Standfiekd type of surprise tomorrow..

    Why not?

After Love was not released in the US.

Last year, people were predicting a surprise supporting actor nominee from films that were bigger contenders like Nomadland (Strathairn) or Minari (Kim) which is why I’m skeptical about Plemons. If I had to pick an equivalent to LaKeith (someone whose film isn’t viewed as a top 5 contender so he goes overlooked), I’d say Robin de Jesús (tick, tick… BOOM!).

In costume design, I honestly might predict Coming 2 America. Ruth E. Carter’s probably winning the CDG for Contemporary Film & the first movie was nominated here as well.

Unless we’re in for some major acting snubs, something has to be the lone writing nominee. If it’s in adapted, maybe it’s The Last Duel? That had an uptick after it’s HBO Max release although I’m not sure if it was too late by then.

Some surprises I could see happening (I’m predicting some of them)

The Power of the Dog snubbed in Editing
    Licorice Pizza in Costume Design
The Tragedy of Macbeth in Original Score
One of Dornan/Dench making it in
Last Night in Soho in Sound
    Belle in Animated Feature
King Richard snubbed in Original Screenplay
    Penelope Cruz in Best Actress

I’m having the same hunch for some reason, though I’m not quite confident enough to predict it…

My two wildest picks (which I can’t force myself to actually predict) are Cooper for Nightmare Alley and Wright for The French Dispatch.

Not predicting it but West Side Story being snubbed in Costumes wouldn’t shock me at this point. That being said, I’m not predicting it, though I am predicting a miss for Nightmare Alley and Cyrano in favor of Licorice Pizza.

As crazy as it may sound, I do wonder if Olivia Colman could miss Actress. Not because she was snubbed at BAFTA, but because that film is just not that well liked outside film and Oscars circles. I’m keeping her because 1) I have 100/1 odds and I’m definitely not letting that go at this late date and 2) she’s Olivia Colman. Also I don’t know who would be nominated instead.

I’m most certainly not confident enough to predict this but I’m keeping the possibility of both Branagh AND Spielberg being snubbed for (obviously) Hamaguchi and either Joel Coen or Adam McKay.

What I am confident enough to predict, though, is Belfast missing Sound (I find it hard to believe a sound designer who watches the film won’t notice the mic wire in the film) and Original Song (it’s not available to listen to on any music platforms last I checked, much like Wuhan Flu last year), A Hero missing International (I have Great Freedom in its place but I could see Compartment No 6 or Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom getting in as well), and either Ricardos or King Richard missing Original Screenplay (I’m going Ricardos since I don’t have it in Picture and replacing it with The French Dispatch).

Actually, only one of those spots are up for grabs. Chastain is a lock.

I’m not at all commenting on the issue of whether or not she deserves a nomination but I was struck that neither Scott Feinberg nor Clayton Davis included her in their final predictions. I DEFINITELY don’t rely on them for accurate picks, and maybe having them omit Chastain is a good argument in her favor, but at this point, while her nomination is probably more likely than not, I don’t think she’s a lock.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I haven’t included her in my own picks, but that in part is to preserve better odds I have for other candidates.)

When the Academy goes rogue and snubs Will Smith, Aunjanue,Negga, Denzel , King Richard and the #oscarsowhite floodgate opens so wide it destroys the Academy’s credibility.

    Why not?

Because it wasn’t in the eligibility list the Academy shared.

My NGNG is Licorice Pizza in Production Design.
The film is set to overperform tomorrow and its PD is similar to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

    Cooper Hoffman in Best Actor

This one would be the best thing ever.
