There was a great thread a long time ago on here that was titled “Oscar Wins That Make You Scratch Your Head” so I was thinking that I would make a thread about nominations that make you scratch your head meaning Oscar nominations that are befuddling to you not nominations that you personally don’t care for but begrudgingly understand why they were nominated. For me I don’t understand why Hannah And Her Sisters was nominated for Best Art Direction. It takes place on location in New York City and was filmed in Mia Farrow’s apartment as well. And Across The Universe getting nominated for Best Costume Design.Yours?

The Swarm, for Best Costume Design. Oddest one ever.

A Star is Born for Cinematography is a recent one. It’s..fine? To nominate that over something like Beale Street was a joke lol. Or even First Man.

I genuinely don’t understand how Chocolat got any oscar love. It’s a fine light-hearted film but a best picture nominee? I honestly don’t know.

There’s also last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody mess ofc.

Click for Makeup and Borat for Adapted Screenplay. Like what lol?

I’d get into how BR getting all those noms and wins throughout the season got me to question the Academy’s purpose, but I don’t feel like doing that.

Cooper and Rockwell were both filler nominees that got caught up in praise for their films. It’s clear why they were nominated.

Jacki Weaver in “Silver Linings Playbook.” She was so good in “Animal Kingdom” a few years before, but she literally did nothing in SLP.

Her Oscar clip is the proof.

I guess the film swept Moriarty in.

The annoying thing about that one is both Beverly D’Angelo (Coal Miner’s Daughter) Debra Winger (Urban Cowboy) got left out. Both great performances. I just saw Urban Cowboy recently. Hard to believe she didn’t get in. That was a real star making performance.

The one for Into the Woods is deserved and she was actually the best in her category I will always stand by that. 😛

Anyway La La Land for Best Sound Editing will be confusing to me forever.
