They’ve done this a bunch. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn’t.

Mary Tyler Moore presented Timothy Hutton his Oscar for Ordinary People.

Jason Miller presented William Peter Blatty his for The Exorcist.

I think they thought they’d have Melanie Griffith presenting to her Working Girl co-star Sigourney Weaver but that didn’t work out.

I read Diane Keaton didn’t want to present Best Actor the year after she won because Warren Beatty was among the nominees and they were together.

    Other cases?

Sean Connery presented to previous costar Catherine Zeta Jones. If I remember correctly he just said “Catherine”.

Michael Douglas presented BP to Gladiator which was weird as he was in Traffic and his director also had Erin Brockovich as a nominee.

Julia Roberts loved her life when she presented Denzel (previous costar).

Jack Nicholson presented BP to hiw own film, The Departed.

And these examples of everybody obviously knowing who the winners would be:

Spielberg, Coppola and Lucas gave BD to Scorsese.

Cruz and Banderas gave the Oscar to Almodovar and Spain.

    Sofia Loren to Roberto Benignini.

Scott previously directed Douglas in the 1989 movie Black Rain.

Come to think of it William Hurt presented to Marlee Matlin when they were still a couple. (that would have been awkward had she lost!)

William Holden presented Best Actress to his co-star Grace Kelly. He also co-starred with fellow nominee Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina (they had a love affair during filming).

Colin Firth had a fun time presenting Best Actress when he presented it to Meryl referencing Mamma Mia. That year, he had to say something about every nominee before announcing the winner.

Michael and Kirk Douglas presented Best Picture to Catherine Zeta-Jones’s film Chicago (should’ve gone to The Pianist, but that discussion is for another day).

This makes sense as Hurt was the previous year’s winner. But he would be nominated again the following year so Matlin presented that category (Douglas won). And for 86 or 87 they weren’t just costars, they were also dating, I believe.

Gotta love the 1987 Oscars, in which they had Glenn Close & Michael Douglas present Best Supporting Actress to Olympia Dukakis (over their co-star Anne Archer) and Cher present Best Supporting Actor to Sean Connery (over her co-star Vincent Gardenia).

THE OSCAR 100 (#65-61): Angela Lansbury, Shirley MacLaine, Vivien Leigh, Jane Darwell and Faye Dunaway

The Marlee Matlin/William Hurt presentation didn’t end well. She has said that later that night he berated her for getting lucky. Saying something like actors work all their lives for an Oscar and she got one on her first film at 21 years old.

I noticed he is not there the next year when she presented to Michael Douglas. I think they had broken up by then and he was with Holly Hunter.

That is odd. I guess they thought neither Archer or Gardenia had a chance. On the Tonys a few years ago they had Sally Field and Matthew Broderick present Best Actor when everyone thought it was between Tom Hanks and Nathan Lane. Then neither Field or Broderick’s costars won when Tracey Letts had a surprise win.
