Oscar ratings were down this year, as much as a dismal 16%, according to the pundits doing the counting. This is the lowest in at least six years.

What do you think happened? Why?

Lol! I’m waiting for Paul’s comment, I hope. He’ll likely make some legit points in his own charming way.

because nobody saw the movies and nobody knew the acting winners. and NPH is not a name host. i think it’s pretty obvious.

if you look at the last couple of years, they had some very popular movies in the lineup both in 2012 and 2013. American Sniper couldn’t do it on its own, plus it wasn’t in the running to win anything anyway.

Do you think it’s as simple as that though? I can understand them not recognizing Redmayne, although he did do some popular genre television work, and didnt audiences flood Juno? Or do you think they didnt notice Simmons? Possible.

Arquette has been around for a long time. Perhaps they havent seen her films but what about her television work? And then there’s Moore. If you dont know who she is, why would you bother watching an Awards show like the Oscars?

The points about the overall films, and noone having seen them are true, and it’s  not good.

This is terrible news for the Industry imo. Not good for business at all. But how do you fix it? They’ve tried things already, but they havent been all too successful. They can always bounce back, but the think tanks have got some debriefing to do.

Replace the basic British period dramas with movies critics and/or moviegoers actually liked.

I am glad the general public had no clue what the movies were. That means they were decent movies. Let Joey Donuts go see Transformers and leave the Oscars to good films like it is supposed to be. They ain’t going nowhere.

If Star Wars doesn’t get nominated next year, they will have to expand BP to 20 slots.

There was no big film in contention. American Sniper was the biggest in terms of box office takings, but it’s not on par with Gravity, and the four front runners weren’t massive names this year. People, apparently, wanted Cooper and Witherspoon to win the leading awards, but knew they wouldn’t. Last year Jennifer Lawrence was in with a bit of a shot, McConaughey is a household name. Ellen is a trusted pair of hands. The likes of DiCaprio and Bullock were also there.

Best Picture between Birdman and Boyhood? Not big films with the casual viewer who may nor may not watch every year. The nominees didn’t have quite the star power of DiCaprio and Bullock last year. Unless you saw the films this year, it probably wasn’t that exciting to want to watch.

The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game both went down well with critics, and audiences liked them too. Fewer people saw Boyhood and Birdman, the two front runners. The two British films had Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch in them, who were big name on social media, and probably did attract some viewers the show may not have had without them.

Was this truly the worst Best Picture lineup in a decade?
    I do believe so.
Along with the weak picture lineup,as far as blockbusters, and the fact  the host was a relative unknown to movies should help to explain the poor numbers.  Doogie Howser as host of the Oscars, are you kidding me?
Sorry, Neil Patrick Harris is really not very well known to the masses, so when people heard that NPH was hosting, many said Who?
Just some idiot who would say
“The subject of ‘Citizenfour,’ Edward Snowden, couldn’t be here tonight for some treason”?  This is just after Citizenfour received the Oscar for best documentary.

OK, a weak movie lineup and  an insipid host

They’ve got to nominate hits to bring in viewers. And they also need to hire a comedian who’s well known.

It comes down to the movies in the end. And no, I don’t believe the acting winners are that well known- Arquette and Moore are veteran actresses but were never big stars, Redmayne is totally unknown, and Simmons is sort of a “hey, it’s that guy” actor. And again, no one saw the movies they were winning for.

When the frontrunner movies for the top 6 awards all made under $40 million each, that’s not a lineup to bring in ratings.

But is it fair to place the blame on NPH? I liked him as the Host. He is in Gone Girl, plus, he’s a brave guy. His quip re C4 may have been in poor taste for some of us, but the tone with which the show started  made me nervous, and  fortunately quickly dispelled.

Noone has mentioned the absence of diversity. Guardians may have helped if it took it’s deserving place amongst the BP nominees. But what about David Oyelowo? It’s true he’s not as recognizable as some, but he’s as good or better than the ones who were there.

At the very least, I dont think his exclusion helped.
