Fuck additional categories. Just give Glenn Close the honorary.

especially this year with the wrong film winning in both

Well, 1917 should have won sound editing while Ford v Ferrari should have won sound mixing.

She deserves to win a competitive Oscar. Let’s hope 2021 is (finally) her year.

They should replace the sound category with casting or stunt coordination.

I doubt they will do anything to make the ceremony shorter. They’re gonna put some nonsense musical tribute to take up the time.

and now even fewer people will care about the difference between sound editing and mixing, not that the previous results in these categories have helped at all

VOD is the future, whether these dinosaurs realize it or not. That change should stay permanent post-covid-19, if we ever get to that point. Nice to see the Sound merge and expanding the Foreign Language Film vote. The power of “Parasite” lol! I’m all for getting a Casting category, so the sooner the better there.

She finally wins and has to accept the award via Zoom call.

I know most people here wanted that merge, but it’s kinda sad to me to say goodbye to a category that made Arrival an Oscar winning movie.

That’s what I was saying. But academy voters can’t tell the difference so they give the awards randomly. Which is why they needed to be combined.

God no. That would be absolutely horrible. I think if things aren’t better by January (I have faith that it will) I think the Academy will most likely postpone the ceremony. I’m not seeing them going ahead with the biggest awards ceremony in the world via Zoom/Skype.

I hate the merge. Less movies will be recognized with a nomination. A Quiet Place and All is Lost are Oscar-nominated films because of their sole nomination in Best Sound Editing.

They should have at least read the definitions of both categories because they are really different from each other.

Although I understand the reasoning behind it, personally I’m disappointed by the merger of the sound categories. The Oscars is about awarding the craft of movie making. The general public doesn’t understand the difference between the two categories (and frankly, some Academy members), but it is quite a big one – and both require different skillsets. It’s going to be a much tougher fight with a lone sound category now….
