Russell Crowe was sort of the same thing. Three in a row and then left out for Master and Commander.

The accusations he received at the time of being bad tempered did not help either.

    Viola Davis, Widows

She was borderline. There were better performances in that movie that went almost entirely unrecognised by the academy. By all accounts she is likely to be recognised again this year. I wouldn’t say her omission said they were ‘over her’ as much as she just won’t get in for everything. Especially when it’s not her best work.

    For what?

She has a classic August Wilson play adaptation coming out this year.

Jessica Chastain has been struggling for years now. Three Globes nominations after ZDT, yet none made it to SAG, BAFTAs and Oscars

Willem Dafoe and Sam Rockwell are both examples of two actors that were nominated (or won) two years in a row, and then they gave some of their best performances ever in 2019 and got completely ignored.

    Toni Collette – The Hours/About a Boy
    Toni Collette – Japanese Story
Toni Collette – Little Miss Sunshine
    Toni Collette – Hereditary

    Tilda Swinton – Julia
Tilda Swinton – I Am Love
Tilda Swinton – We Need to Talk About Kevin
    Tilda Swinton – Snowpiercer

a 2nd or lead nomination would be nice…

Sally Field missing for Steel Magnolias was probably residual disdain for her you like me speech. It seemed like they didn’t like her anymore. (She was predicted to be nominated.) She missed for Forrest Gump too but eventually got that third nomination recently for Lincoln.

They were not totally ignored. It’s just that last year was so competitive in both male categories.

Everything about Widows awards run was odd. Plus, better films were in contention like Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book.
