Someone made a comment in one of the threads here that it is now harder to get an acting nomination if you’re (a) the only actor nominated for your film, and (b) in a movie that is not a Best Picture nominee.

That comment bugged me, because I personally have a lot of favorite performances from people who meet both criteria. So I found some time today to sit down and look at the stats, and they are insane. Since the expansion of BP nominations, the number of sole acting nominations from non-BP films got even less compared to before. That number is even less if you remove actors from that same list who’s been nominated before.

2010- 5/20 First Time Nominees in that list: 2
    2011- 5/20 FTN: 1
    2012- 7/20 FTN: 4
    2013- 3/20 FTN: 0
    2014- 0/20!!! FTN: 0
    2015- 5/20 FTN: 1
    2016- 5/20 FTN: 3
    2017- 6/20 FTN: 2
    2018- 4/20 FTN: 1
    2019- 3/20 FTN: 1
    2020- 5/20 FTN: 2

That’s some jarring numbers when compared to…
    2009- 8/20 FTN: 4
    2008- 13/20 FTN: 6
    2007- 6/20 FTN: 3
    2006- 9/20 FTN: 7
    2005- 7/20
    2004- 8/20
    2003- 6/20
    2002- 4/20
    2001- 7/20

I just love movies. And awards.
