    Hello,

What do you guys think about potential big upsets at the Oscars? I’ve been giving some thought to:

    -Get Out winning picture
-“Mighty River” or “Mystery of Love” winning original song
-Star Wars getting something? (4 noms) Maybe visual effects thanks to vote splitting from Apes and BR2049?
-Baby Driver getting a couple of Oscars (editing+sound editing)?

Baby Driver is definitely upsetting Dunkirk in one or two categories. The industry doesn’t love Dunkirk as much as we think.

I wonder why. Why industry didn’t love it that much?

I’m thinking Beauty and the Beast surprises in either Costumes or Production Design. I think they like that style.

I don’t see it in costumes since they love Phantom Thread (PTA got a directing nom), but I think it could happen in Production Design (which will mean TSOW won’t win Picture).

Timothée Chalamet. The performance has cultural impact. And history-making if he wins.

MAYBE because it is boring as hell.

    Great technical achievement though.

What do you mean by “that style?” In my mind, the film probably plays like Cinderella and Into the Woods, deserving of 1 or 2 wins, but ultimately loses.

Period style, but also very vibrant, colorful, and ostentatious. I think this is much more demanding of attention in those categories than those two movies were.

Costumes is very likely. Beauty and the Beast coincidentally also got the exact 2 nominations Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them got last year, which also was a fantasy film from a major studio that lost the Costume Designers Guild and had a previous Oscar winner as Costume Designer. The fact Jacqueline Durran is nominated twice I don’t think will hurt her chances, since far more people are likely to vote for Beauty and the Beast than Darkest Hour for Costumes.

Note to myself: Don’t ever feed the trolls. Don’t get involved in others drama. Don’t let myself be swayed by others predictions, trust my gut more often!

Note to all others: If you don’t happen to like me, ignore me. It is that simple.

Why are people predicting Baby Driver upsetting in Sound Editing? Isn’t it much more clearly a Sound Mixing contender?

I love high minded films. I’m crazy about war films and Dunkirk was probably the most painful theater going experience of my entire life aside from The Thin Red Line. Nolan can make a film drag as well as anyone in history. There are traces of his tendency to do that in all of his work but Dunkirk is the grandmother of them all. I’d rather go to traffic court for a week than have to sit through that movie again.
