Also, Mickey Rooney received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1979 as horse trainer Henry Dailey in The Black Stallion. In 1981, Ian Holm was nominated in the same category as athletic trainer Sam Mussabini in Chariots Of Fire.

Richard Jenkins was nominated for Best Actor in The Visitor in 2008 as a college professor named Walter Vale, although in the movie, you don’t really seem him doing that much teaching, but that’s what his character’s job profession is.

John Houseman WON a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1973 for The Paper Chase as law school professor Charles Kingsfield.

Richard Dreyfuss for “Mr. Holland’s Opus”! That one should have been a given.

Haven’t seen the movies in a while but Geoffrey Rush is a vocal coach in The King’s Speech and I believe Christian Bale was his brother’s trainer in The Fighter.

Also, Robin Williams for Good Will Hunting?

I just love movies. And awards.

If we’re counting trainers, then add these two:

Burgess Meredith in “Rocky” as Rocky’s trainer and cutman Mickey.

Louis Gossett, Jr. in “An Officer and a Gentleman” as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley.
