I have included dancers but failed to add strippers (Valerie Perrine, Lenny; Mary Steenburgen, Melvin and Howard and Natalie Portman, Closer) and musicians who play in the background (like Victor Buono of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane or Ryan Gosling in La La Land). Peter O Toole – My Favorite Year (actor)

Peter O’Toole (again) – Venus (actor)

Roy Scheider – All that Jazz (basically playing Bob Fosse)

F Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce are performers/musicians in Amadeus.

I think Dexter Gordon also qualifies for this.

    Adrien Brody – The Pianist

Terrence Howard – Hustle & Flow

I think Jack Lemmon in Tribute played some sort of performer

I didn’t think about Lemmon (“Some Like It Hot”) and Brody as they played musicians. Anyway, thank you all! If someone is missing, please let me know.

And thanks for bringing “Annie Hall”. It’s one of my favorite movies but I forgot that Alvy can be seen as comedy act – stage performer and Annie tries her chances as a singer.

I haven’t seen “All That Jazz”. I know Fosse was also an actor but was Joe Gideon also one, in addition to being director and choreographer?

Lemmon in “Tribute” was, according to synopsis, press agent.

Szpilman and Mozart were composers and musicians, right? And DJay from “Hustle & Flow”?

    Thanks for so many examples.

^^Thanks to you both. I don’t know how I omitted Baryshnikov, Davidson and Avery! I was thinking about all of them.

And James Whale was not a performer–he was a film director.  If you’re going to include Ian McKellen’s nomination, then you’ll have to use other behind-the-scenes roles (Kirk Douglas in THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, Peter O’Toole in THE STUNT MAN, Ed Harris in THE TRUMAN SHOW, etc.)
