So, indiferent from categories, what performances do you think were better than those that got nominated at this year’s Academy Awards? I’ve seen only a bunch of the twenty nominated performances, yet the number of non-nominated performances within the same movies of the nominees is pretty big:
Jonathan Banks, Jason Mitchell and Rob Morgan > Mary J. Blige
Beanie Feldstein > Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf
Betty Gabriel, LilRel Howery > Daniel Kaluuya
Sebastian Stan and Paul Walter Hauser > Margot Robbie and Allison Janney
And The Post, The Florida Project and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri got the right ones.February 5, 2018 at 7:37 am #1202487705
Michael Shannon and Michael Stuhlbarg in the Shape of Water -> better than the 3 nominated performancesFebruary 5, 2018 at 8:14 am #1202487746
Bria Vinaite > Willem DafoeFebruary 5, 2018 at 8:36 am #1202487768
Michael Shannon over Richard Jenkins
Jason Mitchell/Garrett Hedlund/Carey Mulligan over Mary J. Blige
Vicky Krieps over Lesley ManvilleFebruary 5, 2018 at 9:11 am #1202487797
I preferred Michael Shannon’s performance to that of Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer.February 5, 2018 at 9:17 am #1202487804
Michelle Williams > Christopher PlummerFebruary 5, 2018 at 9:29 am #1202487811
Bria Vinaite > Willem Dafoe
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
Also the entire cast but specifically Garret Hedlund and Jason Mitchell over Mary J Blige.
Michael Stuhlbarg over Jenkins and Spencer.
Michelle Williams over Christopher Plummer.
Allison Williams over Daniel Kaluuya.February 5, 2018 at 9:41 am #1202487827
Michael Shannon and Michael Stuhlbarg over Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer in The Shape of Water is an easy one. I think that’s the only example from the movies I’ve seen.February 5, 2018 at 10:14 am #1202487853
The glasses, the mud, the chocolate > Mary J. BligeFebruary 5, 2018 at 10:18 am #1202487857
I’m not sure I’d swap out Leslie Manville (who was excellent), but Harriet Sansom Harris gave a scene-stealing 5 minute performance in “Phantom Thread.” Harris obviously knows how to chew the scenery (see her Tony winning/broadway performances, and TV work), but she completely stole her scenes from Daniel Day-Lewis in an utterly heartbreaking cameo.February 5, 2018 at 10:28 am #1202487864
Carey Mulligan instead of Mary J Blige
Michael Shannon instead of Richard Jenkins (Shannon is playing Shannon, but it’s still a better performance)
Not 2017, but it’s the first thing I thought about when I saw the thread’s title, because it never gets old:
Bryce Dallas Howard instead of Jessica Chastain (and her nomination for all her films that year)February 5, 2018 at 11:27 am #1202487909
This year Carey Mulligan takes the cake.
But one that absolutely breaks my heart will always be this one:
They both should have been nominated. You cannot nominate one and leave the other one out. You just cannot.Riley (the normal one, not the one who won the predictions contest)ParticipantFebruary 5, 2018 at 11:33 am #1202487911
Michael Shannon > Richard Jenkins & Octavia Spencer
Brooklynn Kimberly Prince & Bria Vinaite > Willem Dafoe
Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, Carey Mulligan, Jonathan Banks, Jason Clarke > Mary J. Blige
Have not seen Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, Christopher Plummer or Denzel Washington.
