I always thought of Michael Shannon as leading than supporting. He had lots of screen time in Shape of Water.

Garret Hedlund and Jason Mitchell > Mary J Blige (When will Hollywood finally realize how much star power and charisma Garret Hedlund possesses?!?)
Vicky Krieps > Lesley Manville

Vicky Krieps > Daniel Day-Lewis, but just barely.
Catherine Keener > Daniel Kaluuya
The entire cast of Mudbound > Mary J. Blige, she is a very noticeable weak link in an otherwise strong cast.
Michelle Williams > Christopher Plummer Don’t really care for either of these performances though.

February 5, 2018 at 1:25 pm #1202487991Jason Mitchell was the real star of Mudbound. He should have been heavily in the conversation for a slot in Supporting Actor. Blige did a fine job but her role wasn’t anywhere near as profoundly layered as Mitchell’s.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 5, 2018 at 1:35 pm #1202488003I’m not sure I’d swap out Leslie Manville (who was excellent), but Harriet Sansom Harris gave a scene-stealing 5 minute performance in “Phantom Thread.” Harris obviously knows how to chew the scenery (see her Tony winning/broadway performances, and TV work), but she completely stole her scenes from Daniel Day-Lewis in an utterly heartbreaking cameo.
I thought I was the only one who thought this!

I’m surprised that people liked Bria Vinaite in The Florida Project. She’s one of the main reasons why I could barely finish the movie. She felt like a youtuber paying a friend to film her. There was no depth in her portrayal at all. All I saw was her being an nuissance to everyone else, practically like an extra with a lot of screentime.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 19, 2018 at 2:19 pm #1202497073I agree with a lot of the comments about Mudbound and Get Out.
As for things that haven’t been mentioned yet… I’m not sure that I would say Lucas Hedges was better than Metcalf or Ronan in Lady Bird, but I will say that he was better than all 5 of the actual Supporting Actor nominees.
