Remember when everyone thought Laura Dern would win for Wild because she’s so overdue, and she barely made the Top 5.

This is not me commenting on the quality, politics, or what have you of Marriage Story, but sincerely wondering at its prospective chances of winning BP:

what is its narrative beyond Baumbach being a high-profile indie writer-director? When was the last time something this seemingly intimate, white, and “apolitical,” with no gimmicks or angles, won Best Picture?

The King’s Speech? Million Dollar Baby?

I dont think it is winning BP but will be a top contender like Manchester By the Sea. But of course no one really knows as things change quickly during the season. Just look at Green Book last year, from TIFF winner to “dead” from controversy and snubbed by guilds to BP winner. The two big strikes against it: Netflix and no IMPORTANCE! factor are not easy things to overcome.

Calling it now; Bombshell is the equivalent of The Favourite and will get Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress x 2, and Original Screenplay nominations, but will only win Best Actress.

Portman looks great. I can see her getting nominated. But will wait for reviews and reactions before putting her in my top 5 again.

Sir, you’re the ignorant/arrogant one. I know you’re fan of “Marriage Story” (&”Jojo Rabbit”) but…. Have you watched the film yet? Do you know how this film will end up in the award season now? You know nothing but a trailer, just like everybody else. So why can’t I compare it to another film which was also highly anticipated but ended up getting nothing after its release? I’m talking about the awards & noms, obviously not the subject of the films. It’s not even September, relax. ugh

The thing is Marriage Story actually looks good unlike Beautiful Boy.

I won’t count Avengers entirely out for Best Picture, since Disney did manage to get Black Panther there with enough of a push. Furthermore, “biggest box office of all time” is a big selling point for Academy voters wanting to make the Oscars more relevant*.

I don’t think it’ll get a performance nomination though, or even screenplay. I have to laugh at that.

*In their viewpoint. Nominating a superhero movie isn’t going to fix ratings trends.

Making my Best Animated Feature OP made me realise how stacked a year this is for animation. (https://www.goldderby.com/forum/movies/oscars-2020-best-animated-feature-predictions/)

What other categories are going to be hyper-competitive this year?
