Chadwick clearly gave an outstanding career best performance in Ma Rainey’s. Anyone convincing themselves that his death is the sole reason for an inevitable victory is in denial. He was always on the cusp of Oscar glory. The industry loved him and were throwing every role his way until one eventually stuck as an awards player. August Wilson adaptations = bait. So whether he had passed or not, his name would’ve still been in the conversation to win.
I think he would still have been nominated but not the frontrunner and winner.
Hopkins would be winning. Chadwick would win if Hopkins were not in the race. Maybe Riz would be also before Chadwick to win. But Chad would definitely have gotten a nomination and top 3 to win.
April 24, 2021 at 9:17 am #1204219155This is so reductive. It does a disservice to both Boseman’s performance and Hopkin’s performance.
Chadwick is not winning because he died. Or because his family might give an emotional speech. He is winning because he gave an incredible performance.
Likewise, Hopkin’s win would be anything but white mediocrity. He truly gives one of the best performances of the year and would be a very deserving winner.
lol no im not saying he’s winning cause he’s dead im saying Hopkins probably not winning if they invited the best actor front runner Chadwick who’s happens to be dead family to the Oscars to loose to Hopkins who not even attending.
April 24, 2021 at 9:25 am #1204219176Y’all overhype Hopkins performance y’all act like he revolutionized the art of acting good performance would be deserving of a Oscar but let’s no act like it’s just because Chadwick dead when he Acted his ass off and put his literally last of his life knowing he was dying into his powerful performance in Ma Rainey.
April 24, 2021 at 9:27 am #1204219181That’s some bullshit right there.
April 24, 2021 at 9:40 am #1204219230The NBP team put out their predictions and all but 1 are predicting Boseman. (Idk how accurate they usually are though)
April 24, 2021 at 9:40 am #1204219232The academy snubbing Boseman for Da 5 Bloods should just be proof that he’s nominated for Ma Rainey because of his amazing performance, not because he’s no longer with us, as some people have condescendingly suggested. If they were voting for just his name, he would have snagged a supporting nom for D5B.
There must be a combination in everything. Yes, he’s not nominated for D5B, and his cameo-like appearance won’t help him to get that, but supporting had much more obstacles to overcome. I mean look at how creative The Academy was by putting both J&TBM lead into supporting. Meanwhile, lead actor category had only six people in contention. Plus, the campaign is really focused on him in lead category (many even forget he’s running for supporting).
Honestly, it feels like Hopkins-Mulligan combo becomes more realistic each day. I hope that is what’s happening this Sunday.

It would serve Netflix well for putting up so many mediocre movies last year lol

Those ballots where voters said Boseman is winning but they are voting for Hopkins, I think that is indicative of a larger trend.
April 24, 2021 at 10:03 am #1204219312The way apart from Roma I have not liked a single one of Netflix’s films ever nominated for Best Picture.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

There were no obstacles in supporting if anything, there was plenty of reasons to nominate. Be it recognizing the 5 bloods for something major or the fact that there was such low support for any of the other nominees for that 5th spot that lakeith somehow made it in despite clearly being campaigned as a lead.
If they were hoping to honor chad cuz of his death, hed be a nom for da 5 bloods as well.

There were plenty of obstacles for Boseman in supporting. The Academy was not as receptive to Da 5 Bloods as SAG was which nominated the film for ensemble or Critics Choice which nominated the film for picture and Spike Lee in director. Paul Raci and Lakeith were passion pick that peaked late in the season.
