out of all the films that won two individual SAG awards, Ma Rainey is the first not nominated for Best Picture (with the exception of Dreamgirls, which might have been nominated in an expanded field).
This is a really good point about the Best Picture omission. Although it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, the film still managed to turn out 1 acting win for Hudson. But to be fair she was sweeping the entire season. There’s a lot of parallels with Murphy and Boseman but I think Murphy’s competition, Alan Arkin, was much more stronger being in a top 2 Best Picture contender and being apart of an ensemble that won at SAG. Arkin was also overdue on his third nomination. I am not sure if the same sentiment for a second overdue Oscar exists for Hopkins and the lack of guild data on The Father is hard to assess if the film is even in top 4 for Picture.

Norbit also really damaged Murphy chances.
April 25, 2021 at 10:08 am #1204221363Any actor that wins this over Anthony Hopkins is not a deserved Oscar.
April 25, 2021 at 10:12 am #12042213761998: only Gwyneth Paltrow won a Globe from the eventual acting Oscar winners. Weirdly neither of the two male winners weren even nominated by the HFPA.
Well it’s not even the same as they weren’t even nominated. Plus Judi Dench won a Globe a year earlier. So it’s unlikely they go 1/4 this year.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

That rourke robbery legit pissed me off big time.
April 25, 2021 at 4:06 pm #1204222631So let me get this straight, for his performance in Ma Rainey:
Chadwick won LAFCA, was a RU at NSFC, won the oldest critics group award in the UK (LFCC), plethora of second tier and third tier critics awards, fan voted awards like the Goldderby award and the OFTA award, won an American industry award (SAG), a foreign industry award (AACTA), an American journalist group award (Critics Choice), a foreign journalist group award (Golden Globes)…
Yet this forum is trying to spin the narrative that somehow he is carried by sentimentality only? That Anthony is obviously more acclaimed and this is a similar case of Close vs Colman when the former basically had won nothing before the Globes?
April 25, 2021 at 8:19 pm #1204226147I too am somewhat confident as well. 2 individual SAG wins for a film resulting in 0 Oscar wins for neither performance is unprecedented. Ma Rainey might not be beloved but the performances are highly lauded.

April 25, 2021 at 8:32 pm #1204226411Very glad I trusted BAFTA, and now Sir Anthony is a two-time Oscar Winner. I would’ve loved watching Olivia accepting but I don’t know what happened.
Best Picture winner CODA
Academy Award winner Jessica ChastainApril 25, 2021 at 8:33 pm #1204226430It happened again. “Chadwick’s winning so I’m voting for Hopkins.” And that’s how Hopkins won. Deserved win of course. Poor Chad however.
Never count on the majority of people to vote for a favorite to win. Be it the Oscars or the election. It doesn’t bloody work.
