According to Wikipedia is a drama and musical.
The term musical is thrown away too often. The movie is supposed to have musical segments, but they’re in universe performances, so it’s not a musical.

biggest misconception is that films containing songs constitute musicals… this is false. they don’t suddenly break into song and dance like in hairspray or high school musical – it’s part of the story, like ASIB.

Well, that means they could put Boseman in the musical category.

I think the HFPA has the right to flip the decision if they don’t agree with it.

But they won’t in this instance. Just like Bohemian Rhapsody, Judy, A Star Is Born etc.
Why are some people insitent with this Ma Rainey can go Comedy thing, when it transparent that Globes don’t do this anymore?

This same discussion happens. every. single. year. sigh.
It’s not even the first it’s happened regarding Boseman (see Get On Up).

The Martian was submitted as a comedy, and I seem to remember reading that the HFPA just barely accepted that categorisation in their vote on the decision. The group normally complies with the studios’ wishes so that’s telling.

I don’t think, however, it’s inaccurate to call A Star Is Born a musical as the songs carry so much dramatic and thematic weight. No one, for instance, considers the film version of Cabaret not to be a musical just because all the songs are diegetic (i.e. in universe). The parameters of what we consider musicals and what we don’t are more complex than you seem to suggest.
Still, I agree that Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom probably shouldn’t be considered a musical.

Although if it did somehow go comedy in an alternate universe then Kirby and Hopkins would be locked for the drama wins and Boseman and Davis would be locked for the comedy wins. What a different world that would be.
FYC OSCARS : PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN IN ALL CATEGORIES (ESP. ACTRESS – Carey Mulligan AND ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY — EMERALD FENNELL), VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", ESSIE DAVIS FOR "BABYTEETH"

Yeah, it’s going drama. But that would certainly change the dynamic of the Globe winners for sure in those four categories.

Why the fuck did you mention me exactly? I literally said Ma Rainey is a drama, and will be submitted as drama. Learn to read.
