I saw Bad Education the other day and the way Hugh Jackman would be a nomination lock if the film was competing in the movie and not TV awards…

I think he’s safe.

DeNiro was outshadowed by both Pacino and Pesci and the de-aging tech was controversial to say the least. Oldman is by far the best performance of his film. He’s safe.

And again, I feel like De Niro was hurt by making a bunch of crappy movies beforehand, and being so well rewarded in the past that people were fine leaving him out in favor of others, given it was such a competitive year.
Meanwhile, Oldman’s recent resume is fairly strong, excluding The Laundromat, and most people agree that he deserved way more nominations than he has.
And I have to say, I don’t think Oldman got overshadowed in Mank at all. He was in every single scene and terrific in all of them.
December 13, 2020 at 8:10 am #1203916511He isn’t overshadowed in Mank IMO, but a lot of people do claim that Seyfried was the real MVP.
But is nothing if we compare to the whole Irishman situation

December 13, 2020 at 8:21 am #1203916532You misunderstood, DeNiro is a name that should easily get checked off, even if he gets overshadowed or whatever, and Oldman has less namecheck factor than Robert De Niro. Also, Amanda Seyfried is objectively the best performance from Mank.
Oldman is a veteran actor and just won an Oscar recently. He IS a namecheck factor.
And there’s no way Seyfried overshadowed him. She was just fine in my opinion, nothing spectacular, while Oldman probably gave a career best performance.

Seyfried is not objectively the best performance. Objectively means opinions have nothing to do with it, and ranking performances is entirely based on opinions.
December 13, 2020 at 8:34 am #1203916549Mank will not underperform and certainly will not go home with 0 wins. At the very least it will win cinematography and production design, and will be a strong contender in at least 5 other categories. Oldman isn’t missing either, the combination of performance, film, name and competition will make him a comfortable 3rd, or 4th at worst.
