I feel like we’re all taking for granted that Riz Ahmed is now a seeming lock for a nomination. Just two months ago he was a longshot.

So I remember reading someone ask about the actors who got in at the Oscars without SAG or Globe and I got curious so I looked it up and looks like its the hardest for Actors. In the last decade –

    Lead Actor:

    2010 – Javier Bardem, Biutiful
2011 – Gary Oldman, Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
2014 – Bradley Cooper, American Sniper

    Lead Actress:

2012 – Emmanuelle Riva, Amour + Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild
2014 – Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
    2015 – Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
    2018 – Yalitza Aparicio, Roma

    Supporting Actor:

2011 – Max Von Sydow, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
2013 – Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
2015 – Tom Hardy, The Revenant + Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
2016 – Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals

    Supporting Actress:

2012 – Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings Playbook
    2014 – Laura Dern, Wild
2017 – Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
2018 – Marina de Tavira, Roma
2019 – Florence Pugh, Little Women

    FYC:

Best Director - Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Darius Marder (Sound of Metal)

Lead Actor - Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actor - Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)

Mads could be nominated at BAFTA and then the Oscar like Bardem, Oldman and Banderas.

    I think Lindo is DOA

    Genuine question because I am changing my predictions again for the Oscars and would love some second opinions;

Is it delusional to put Yeun in the 5th slot? I find that since the SAG Awards are peer-nominated and the Globe picks are identical (save for Rahim), I feel that Yeun has a better shot than Rahim. I’m still waiting for the CC noms and the BAFTA noms (where Rahim could definitely show up), but I’m really leaning towards Yeun since SAG is the somewhat better barometer for this race. I feel like the Minari snub at the Globes could perhaps influence voters? And I’m kind of optimistic that the AMPAS will be open to nominating more Asian actors this year.

I would say Lindo could sneak in, too, but my faith is wavering due to his SAG and Globe snub, along with the complete D5B snub at the Globes. Of course, this doesn’t mean he can’t show up on nomination morning, but I’m becoming increasingly less confident.

SAG has been so good to Minari and I hope the love continues; I’m interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts!

    It’s Lindo vs Yeun now.

    Lindo can still happen.

I think the line-up for Oscar is still Boseman, Hopkins, Ahmed, Oldman and Lindo. Asian actors do not perform well in acting categories. Remember Zhang ziyi hitting all the precursors but still missed the Oscar nomination.

Also, Lindo’s role is significantly showier than Yeun’s, who is comparatively very understated. They usually gravitate towards showier performances.

Because Actor often aligns with the strength of their films, it’ll just come down to which film the Academy liked better.

Of the two, Minari is an easier watch.
