“Streep has, for what feels like over a decade, been playing a drag version of Streep herself, leaning into bad habits, grating tics, and heavy sighs that speak less to the character than someone underneath another costume that they’ve barely considered.”

    Ouch.

Positive reviews about Streep (so far)

“As fantastic as every cast member is — and there isn’t a dud in the bunch — it’s still Streep’s show. Donning an elegant red wig and a dizzying array of brightly colored pantsuits and fur capes, Streep dips into her throaty lower register to deliver a bevy of bangers” – Indiewire

“Meryl Streep is in delectable form in The Prom as Dee Dee Allen, a Tony-winning stage diva who must unlearn years of celebrity self-absorption and take the unfamiliar step of putting other people’s needs first. Whenever she’s center-screen, this Netflix adaptation of the disarming 2018 Broadway musical sparkles with campy humor […] Reincarnating her Death Becomes Her scenery chewer with a dash of Patti LuPone, Streep is consistently hilarious.” – The Hollywood Reporter

“It’s clear all involved are having a blast. Streep in particular camps it up something royal as the deluded Dee Dee” – Empire

“Elsewhere, Meryl Streep is having the most fun in years as she revels in her character’s awfulness and delivers the standout number with ‘It’s Not About Me’. Streep runs rings around the rest of the cast” – Digital Spy

“Streep shows some real belting skills in her big routine” – The Wrap

“The fact that Meryl Streep connects the two is a delight: at 71, this is an actress who still knows how to have a good time in her craft, and the viewer can feel the joy in it.” – Screen Daily

“Ms. Streep leads the way and relaxes all her co-stars when she’s on screen, somehow managing both to steal the scene and not seem like she wants it.” – Splash Report

“We all know that Meryl Streep is a legend. There is no denying that. However, this film allows her to deliver her most endearing performance since Julie & Julia. And considering her status as an iconic actress in Hollywood, it is so much fun getting to see her play a character like Dee Dee, where she can poke fun at what it is like to be a celebrity. Streep looks like she is having a blast, just like she did in Mamma Mia.” – We Live Entertainment

Her contenders have better reviews and more acclaimed movies. She’s not getting in for this.

Ooh ok, I had no idea ab this, but I believe you. I’d hope none of our users here engage in that talk about makeup wins, especially for Black actresses: see Bassett having ONE nom..preposterous lol. I’ve seen very, very little of Newton’s work, and none recently, but she seemed really good and clips I’ve seen of her in WW are excellent Yeah, that infighting doesn’t really serve anything, being reductive about “makeup wins.” It’s often still for a great performance. And I suppose it’s better to think of it as a “building narrative” as opposed to a “makeup win.”

You’re doing amazing sweetie. Spill that tea

Meryl doesn’t need to happen for every movie she’s making. Let us and her rest already. At least for a while.

Handpicking reviews for a mid-50s MC movie where other members of the cast have more acclaim is not going to make Meryl happen here.

Vanity Fair’s 10 Best Movies of 2020: 1. The Nest

Carrie Coon did that! But seriously if her film was slightly more conventional she might’ve had a shot at a nomination. Her performance is win worthy.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

Watch Carrie win one of the more important critics groups — either NYC or LA.
