I think I may be sometimes confused by your curious use of question marks.

I’ve never thought anybody would be the critics’ consensus, not even McDormand, and I’ve never thought Mulligan would actually win, (although hers is my favorite performance.)   One place we definitely disagree on is your view that Mulligan and Kirby can only win if they are the consensus critics’ pick.  Regardless of whatever critics say, I don’t think they’ll have a dispositive influence on the ultimate winner.
