The year ellen hosted 2014 was good in ratings 42 million viewers. It went downhill after they started being political and woke.

The Oscars always had political moments. And the arts are just more left-of-center. It just is. Nobody had a problem with it as much until The U.S. became much more polarized and people were egged on to start looking at Hollywood as a target to throw darts at while not looking internally into their own crappy communities and politics that are just as hypocritical and bad.

Oscar viewership going down is based on a lot of things: Nielson being a dumb metric of actual viewership, cable-cutting, bad hosts, irrelevant movies (for the general audience,) political virtue signaling in every speech, unnecessary 4 hour run time etc. etc. What some posters here seem to forget, though, is this is a business. The main purpose for the Oscars is to make money for the academy. They need people to watch lest the oscars don’t exist. This year isn’t even going to hit 20 million audience. That’s bad.

Some ways to fix it: combine all 3 shorts into 1 category. Cut music performances that are not relevant (like this year, for example, none of the songs that will be nominated for best song have any sort of societal impact unless they go for Boss Bitch) but keep them if the nominee is someone like Adele, Gaga, etc. who will bring discussion and viewership. Urge the nominees to accept the award as if we were pre-Trump, because no one really cares about their completely obvious and not at all innovative political takes. Try to have equal representation (at least in best picture) for movies across the field of success, which should not be hard given it will always be 10 nominees. Have 2 blockbusters, 2 300-500M movies, and 6 breakouts, indies, foreign, etc. The blockbusters don’t necessarily have to be big contenders, and do not need to win, but movies like Black Panther, The Last Jedi, and Avengers Endgame were all very well received, so their inclusion would not be unwarranted. This would bring more hype, excitement, and viewership to the awards. Finally, move the award show earlier so we don’t know what the winner will be in 90% of the categories before the show even starts.

I bet Chloe Zhao’s Eternals gets in next year.

After? The same year where her monologue included “of course I voted for 12 years, I’m not a racist”

Did y’all suddenly forget about the boo’s Michael Moore and Nicole Kidman got in their 2003 speeches. Or Sacheen Littlefeather? “a bunch of Zionist hoodlums”? Or when Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon called attention to 266 Haitians who were being held in Guantanamo Bay, barred from entering the United States because they’d tested positive for HIV in 1993? Or even when the FLOTUS presented Best Picture the year prior to Ellen’s 2nd hosting?

In addition – they should start surprising us with their choice of winners and not always giving it to Globe, CC, SAG and BAFTA winners. Only few people would care to watch a show where they already know the winners before the day of  the event. It’s not as if the precursor winners are always the best. One thing I love about the GG is the fact that they mostly go their own way. No one thought Bohemian Rhapsody was winning drama picture till it happened. Most people never expected Joker to be a big player. The GGs don’t give a damn. The Academy needs to ends this boring sweep. It is now compulsory that a lead actor must win SAG in order to win the Oscar. Too bad

    FYC:

    Best Actor :
Riz Ahmed for Sound Of Metal
Delroy Lindo for Da 5 Bloods
    Gary Oldman for Mank

    Best Actress:
Andra Day for The United States vs Billie Holiday
Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman

    Best Supporting Actor:
Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah
Paul Raci for Sound Of Metal

    Best Supporting Actress:
    Amanda Seyfried for Mank
Helena Zengel for News of the World

I agree. It would be great if the Oscars were a little more populist. Every year, 93% of all nominees are Independent and very small Budgeted movies. Oscars need just a little more of Big Budget Epics.

I remember Johnny Depp won the SAG but he didn’t win the Oscar, I don’t remember many sweeps in all the acting categories except for last year and 2018.

All award shows have been struggling the past decade with ratings, it’s not an Oscars thing, people just don’t really care anymore about awards, no film can change that, just on some ocations it can bring more viewership, but nothing like a Titanic or LOTR level.

Grammy’s, VMA’s, Tony’s, Globe’s, all of them have reached an all time low and it’s inevitable, people don’t watch TV that much anymore, streaming is a huge reason for that.

And about only letting popstars perform, to me that is very disrespectful to any artist, that you are ignored just because you’re not popular, just like what happened to Anohni when she got nominated, she preferred not to attend because The Academy didn’t even offer her a chance to perform.

The timing problem is not about the performances, there are many things that they could change and they are not doing, like, we don’t need celebrities doing stand up comedy everytime they get on stage, just say a joke here and there and give the damn award, every person receiving an award should have the time to accept and be grateful, cutting categories of airtime is really sad, or do like the Grammy’s and have a pre-show to give some of them.

All the awards need to do ceremonies on streaming platforms real soon.
    Network television is dead.

A way better solution is to have the Oscars only in Netflix or HBO MAX or D PLUS. Young people never see TV and young people only are in Streaming
