Such a touch category to call. I keep going back and forth between Mulligan and Day and Davis. My preference is Andra Day because I loved her Billie Holiday, but Viola Davis and Carey Mulligan were also very good as were Frances McDormand and Vanessa Kirby (I rewatched Pieces of a Woman and liked Kirby’s performance more the second go around). And I’ve seen Nomadland three times – for McDormand but more so for the vibe of this film. I love it.

I think I’m going to go with Viola Davis since she won SAG and she did give an Oscar caliber performance. But so did Day and so did Mulligan and so did McDormand and so did Kirby. This is how the Oscars are supposed to be – five stellar performances that any actor could win. Love this category.

What’s a dude to do? Yep. Going with Viola Davis here.

Anyone can win except Vanessa, I’m going with Carey just because she is my favorite.

I don’t follow the Oscars most years but I did this year and I have a few thoughts.

    1) After watching all the movies, I found all 5 nominees very deserving. Carey Mulligan, Vanessa Kirby and Andra Day are probably my personal top 3 faves.

    2) I’m personally torn between Davis and Mulligan. I feel like Day doesn’t have much hype left, and that movie being a panned mess doesn’t help her at all. Most sole-nominee acting winners seem to be overdue or riding some sort of strong narrative (Renée’s comeback film or Julianne Moore finally winning an Oscar, for example). I also feel like Frances might lack passion for her in the movie. Most people focus more on the direction and cinematography rather than her.

Kirby is out due to losing everything (watch her pull a Marcia Gay Harden lol), which leaves the other two. I kinda don’t see Ma Rainey’s winning FOUR Oscars, let alone two lead acting wins, without a BP nom. So I think I might stick to predicting Viola and Chadwick knowing only one is probably winning.

Not true. She’s a close second on the scoreboard and if that was the case she wouldn’t have won BAFTA whether some contenders weren’t there or not.

Meh, I think Carey could’ve beaten her at BAFTA.

And by “lack of passion” I meant that I don’t see a real drive to give Frances a third Oscar so soon. Carey and Andra are Oscar-less and Viola has the whole lead Oscar thing going for her. I’m sure a lot of people love Fern but I don’t know if that role will be enough to win her a third time.

I also don’t go with critics groups much. Looking at stats they seem to be biased towards certain types of performances anyways.
