The Life Ahead moves up to 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with 65 reviews in. The film also debuts in Netflix’s Top 10. On Netflix, The Life Ahead debuted at #3 on Nov 16 and is #7 today. Things are looking good for Loren thus far. Hopefully it continues. Still waiting for more reviews to be added to Metacritic. The Metacritic score is 66 with only 23 reviews counted.

I have a feeling that Loren will be a surprise hit with the smaller critic groups.

No one should drag you. We are all here just guessing at this point.

I have heard that a Broadway show called Follies is being made into a movie musical. Heard that it should star Glenn Close. What’s the show about? Could that be her lead Oscar?

    From Wikipedia

“The story concerns a reunion in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, of the past performers of the “Weismann’s Follies”, a musical revue (based on the Ziegfeld Follies), that played in that theatre between the World Wars. It focuses on two couples, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were showgirls in the Follies. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy, a traveling salesman, is having an affair with a girl on the road; Sally is still as much in love with Ben as she was years ago; and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Several of the former showgirls perform their old numbers, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves.”

Here’s a video of Glenn Close singing the biggest song from the musical, “Losing My Mind” in 2011. The song is sung by the character of Sally in the show.

I’m pretty sure the Follies that’s being adapted for screen is The Will Rogers Follies, different from the Sondheim, but maybe it is the Sondheim that’s being adapted. At this point, Close is probably too old to play Sally in Sondheim’s.

I couldn’t find anything online about a movie adaptation of The Will Rogers Follies, but there is a planned movie adaptation of Sondheim’s Follies to be directed by Dominic Cooke as of November 2019.

Here is a great article by Goldderby’s own Susan King.

“Sophia Loren poised to make Oscar history again with ‘The Life Ahead”

    Queen Loren is getting buzz.

Oops my mistake. Yeah, I see them going with someone middle-aged for that role, but I don’t know the show as well as I once did

    1. Viola Davis — Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

    2. Frances McDormand — Nomadland

    3. Kate Winslet — Ammonite

    4. Vanessa Kirby — Pieces of a Woman

    5. Sophia Loren — The Life Ahead

    6. Amy Adams — Hillbilly Elegy

It seems to me that Adams still has a chance, despite the poor criticism of the film. Well, firstly, the film was directed by Ron Howard, whose influence on the American film industry is very great. Voters at the Oscars love Howard and it can’t be denied. Secondly, Adams plays into the hands of her reputation as an actress without a gold Oscar statuette. It seems to me that this film was made specifically for Adams and Close and the main PR of this film is that its two main stars are the main losers of the Oscars.
