I can’t believe Vinterberg’s daughter died 4 days before he started shooting the film.

That makes the final scene and now his nomination so more powerful.

It’s hilarious that everyone here were so sure Sorkin would be snubbed despite a precursor run to the contrary and were ultimately correct.

Sorkin’s screenplay was stronger than his direction. Voters probably agreed.

Neither were strong and worth of recognition though. He deserves to go home empty handed.

Yeah, he talked about it in his interview with Sofia Coppola. She was supposed to act in the movie. Probably most of the branch was aware of that and may have influenced…

Watch out for future Vinterberg projects. He is clearly more respected than I imagined.

Or a high school theatre play.

Which is why I detest A Few Good Men though he was not the director there.

Promising Young Woman is not the runner-up. Either Minari or The Trial of the Chicago 7 are potential spoilers. Nomadland is likely winning though.

Underestimate women at your own peril.

The Director branch has become so auteur driven and snobbish that I really should have predicted the Sorkin snub. I need to carry that with me for the future and stop predicting the Farrellys and Sorkins of the world.

I hope this foreign language directors trend continues.

Why not? It’s the only other film to make Picture/Director/Acting/Screenplay and Editing.

Outside of Actress & possibly Screenplay, there’s no real indication that it’s a serious BP player. The nomination is its reward.

with actress and screenplay could win…

He is soooo deserving. He was there when I watched the movie at Cologne Film Festival and the Q&A with him and Mads was so insightful and fun. I really gained a lot of respect for him on that day.

and if nomadland wins PGA, DGA and BAFTA; minari and trial loses SAG and PYW wins WGA then PYW will be the only option to win besides nomadland

I just want to say I like all nominees except Chicago 7. How would I rank them:

    1. Minari
    2. Nomadland
    3. Judas and the Black Messiah
    4. Sound of Metal
    5. Promising Young Woman
    6. Mank
    7. The Trial of the Chicago 7

I have yet to see The Father.
