Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody say hi.
Neither got in for Directing (thank god).
December 28, 2020 at 4:11 pm #1203950447Just watched Nomadland. Absolutely incredible and visually breathtaking. Chloé Zhao direction was amazing and stunning. She had such control over the story and the camera. Writing was equally amazing. The performances, although subtle, were incredible. Frances delivered the best performance of her career and it was a totally different side of her. I don’t see her winning the Oscar though. I was particularly impressed with Swankie. Such a fierce and heartbreaking performance. She’s not getting nominated but she would be such an inspiring nominee. David Strathairn was very good as well and would be an equally deserving nominee. Cinematography was brilliant. The way it also helped tell the story. It truly felt like a co-lead to Frances. An absolute masterpiece. 10/10.

Yep! I agree with every single word said here, the cinematography was intensely good. There’s a shot of waves crashing against a cliffside that completely took my breath away. All the close up nature shots were so effective in maintaining the tone and the beauty of the world. McDormand was great, but it’s because the cinematography and direction were so completely in sync with her. Zhao is going to be such an incredibly deserved winner.
More chaotic than a soderbergh Oscars
December 28, 2020 at 4:17 pm #1203950470Nomadland was a bore for me. Sorry.
Taking my feelings aside, this film is NOT winning Best Picture. The preferential ballot will not be kind to this just like they were not kind to Roma.
It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

Who’s winning then?
December 28, 2020 at 4:57 pm #1203950512Who’s winning then?
When I think about what’s winning Best Picture at the Oscars I think about a movie that will do well with the preferential ballot.
Like Nomadland (but in this case the chances are much worst), Mank will also do bad here.
I haven’t seen The Father, but it doesn’t seem like a movie that wins BP. TBD.
Then we are left with two crowdpleasers: Soul and Chicago 7. In my opinion, those two have the biggest shots. Soul’s hurdle will be the nomination. An animated feature never won and only 3 have been nominated, but also an animated feature never competed with the preferential ballot. My bet is the preferential ballot will on Soul’s side.
That being said, my bet at the moment: Chicago 7.

Up and Toy Story 3 were nominated in the first two years of the preferential ballot.

Alright guys, let’s say it loud so the people in the back can hear: NOMADLAND WON THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD!
I'm back bitches.

I am pro-Nomadland and all, but for this year the people’s choice award kinda doesn’t mean shit considering this years TIFF was more online and exclusive and small-scale. If you want to use the argument that it’s populist, that doesn’t apply this year.
My Favourite Albums
Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides - SOPHIE
Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
Since I Left You - The Avalanches
Twin Fantasy - Car Seat Headrest
Vespertine - Bjork

Yeah but there’s still plenty of normal movie fans and general audience members who were there. And it’s still the biggest barometer we have for general audience reception and how more populist voters will vote until the Globes.

December 28, 2020 at 6:27 pm #1203950638It’s sad that WB HBO Max deal will hurt Judas and the Black Messiah because it makes the most sense as a Best Picture winner for me.
And if people want to predict a King in Best Director, they better pick Shaka over Regina !

Yeah Judas would be a threat to win if it wasn’t for that. Especially with it’s likely wins in Original Screenplay and Supporting Actor. Maybe they’ll reverse course?

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
December 28, 2020 at 7:20 pm #1203950702I mean, I’m not expecting it to happen either. But it seems more likely than it did two weeks ago, especially with all the backlash they’ve gotten.
I'm back bitches.
