Who said that? Everyone knew The Favourite would thrive with voters there.

From what I remember most people were expecting Colman to win BAFTA, so I can’t see what’s your point.
March 4, 2021 at 7:39 am #1204082114Jodie Foster just beat Glenn Close at AARP.
Close can only be nominated as a sentimental favorite, but she can’t compete with a bigger, more popular legend like Foster. That’s why I’m pretty confident she’ll be snubbed.

March 4, 2021 at 8:39 am #1204082261I strongly doubt that Jodie Foster wins her 3rd Oscar for a film that won’t get any other Oscar nominations. That being said, she’s definitely Top 3 at this point.

March 4, 2021 at 8:41 am #1204082271But the HFPA isn’t really “industry”, they’re absolutely not Academy voters. A Globe win for Close would have been great for publicity but looking at the buzz on the overall ceremony (ratings were down 60%!), I’m not sure if it would have helped too much anyway.
They’re about as close (no pun intended) to the industry as you can get though, and whoever they pick influences other industry voters greatly. Just because the ratings were down doesn’t mean that a Globe win wouldn’t have helped Close. In fact it was pretty much necessary for her chances. Now there’s too many other contenders with Foster joining the race and Close doesn’t have enough passion.

The thing with Close is that her narrative is an Oscar-specific one, really. I think that’s the key to why she might still win – Foster has a comeback narrative of sorts, but it isn’t as strong or as focused on as Close’s is and isn’t really related to Close’s nom chances. Close isn’t being nominated as a ‘sentimental favourite’ so much as she’s being nominated as an ‘overdue favourite’, and that’s why some are predicting she’ll win. I personally don’t buy that she’ll win, but her Oscar nomination has its own specific context, I think, where some voters there will be backing her for the overdue win.
