    What else even is there?

I’m Thinking of Ending Things. It currently has the most nominations in Adapted Screenplay out of all the awards that have been handed out and 6 wins (compared to Nomadland‘s 8). It also has the visibility, name recognition (Charlie Kauffman is a 3 time Oscar nominee and 1 time winner) and the push (Netflix’s FYC page for I’m Thinking of Ending Things is almost entirely dedicated to Kauffman’s screenplay).

FYC OSCARS : PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN IN ALL CATEGORIES (ESP. ACTRESS – Carey Mulligan AND ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY — EMERALD FENNELL), VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", ESSIE DAVIS FOR "BABYTEETH"

    Okay, what replaces it then?

News of the World has no buzz, and almost everyone agrees that if it gets nominated above-the-line it’ll be for just Picture and maybe Director. No one’s predicting it in Screenplay.

Flopbilly Elegy obviously isn’t getting in.

Pieces of a Woman only has buzz for Kirby and Burstyn. It’s eligibility here seems tenuous at best.

    What else even is there?

First Cow. If A24 got a nom for First Reformed, they could get get a nom for this one too.

First Reformed was written and directed by Paul Schrader.

Just because people aren’t predicting it doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Its reviews are respectable, one of the writers was nominated for Lion, and prestige middlebrow fare with low- to mid-70s MC have gotten screenplay nods all the time. It’s also Universal’s only real player this season.

    What else even is there?

First Cow or I’m Thinking of Ending Things.

But it was an early release that flopped hard at box office.

A24 f*cked up the campaigns for First Reformed and Hereditary. But there was a lot of publicity to push Paul to an overdue Oscar nomination. We are talking about the guy who wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

Okay, but anyway there’s precedent for passion choices in screenplay categories.

It’s from Focus which is a division of Universal sure, but aren’t the campaign/marketing teams completely different or do they overlap? I’m not sure.

Anyway we should probably stop talking about screenplays in the supporting actress thread!

I’m Thinking of Ending Things feels like another critic darling that isn’t embraced by Academy voters. It was absolutely hated by audiences and wasn’t very popular on the platform, and it’s also yet another Netflix film that will get lost in the shuffle when they have so many contenders.

I could see it maybe getting in at Critic’s Choice but it will miss the other precursors.

And First Cow will be the same thing: Critic’s Choice nom and snubbed everywhere else. It couldn’t even win the Gotham Award for Best Screenplay: how do you expect it to get in at the Oscars?

I should also point out that First Reformed was only nominated because Paul Schrader is a respected industry veteran who had never been nominated before. If it wasn’t for his extreme overdue factor than First Reformed would have missed entirely and Eighth Grade would have taken the 5th spot, considering that it won WGA and clearly has a lot of industry support.

Unlike Schrader, Kaufman is a 4-time Oscar nominee who won for Eternal Sunshine, so there’s no overdue factor to help get him a nomination. That’s why comparing ITOET to First Reformed is a flawed argument.

Except who has compared I’m Thinking of Ending Things to First Reformed?
