International Feature: The Worst Person in the WorldOctober 1, 2020 at 7:35 am #1203748535In light of Mulan’s relative failure on PVOD, it looks like Disney will not be releasing any more blockbusters in that format in the future.
This means that Soul will likely debut in theaters after all, since Disney clearly wants it to be their major Oscar player this season. This is a major risk that could pay off handsomly if audiences are ready to return to theaters and the Oscars embrace this film, or could backfire tremendously if Soul becomes Pixar’s third flop, after The Good Dinosaur and Onward, and fails to earn major nominations. A Pixar film hasn’t received more than two Oscar nominations since 2010, however, and no blockbuster this year since the COVID era has been profitable, so we’ll see how this goes.

Best Screenplay: Judas and the Black MessiahOctober 1, 2020 at 8:24 am #1203748687I think Mank is getting all technical nominations excluding Visual Effects. In fact, it’s pretty possible it ends up being the most nominated film.

Either Mank or Chicago 7 I see being the most nominated film. It depends on how many acting noms each film gets.

October 1, 2020 at 3:43 pm #1203750083Doesn’t mean much but here’s “The Soundtrack Song of 2020” at the E’s People’s Choice Awards (since it’s only a handful of ceremonies to give out award’s for film songs)

Selena Gomez sung a song for Normal People? As in the Irish miniseries? How did I not know this?

I don’t think she sung it for the show, I think the show just put it in it’s soundtrack.

October 1, 2020 at 5:32 pm #1203750269if I see mulan nominated anywhere in costume/production/makeup design I’ll probably have a meltdown, the whole thing reeks of orientalism

Follow up post.
This article pretty much confirms that Mulan on Disney Plus was a flop, and they won’t do this again. I think they’re trying to test the waters to see if it can do well on other platforms. If it does, then Soul may release on VOD after all.
