Emma has some similarities with Mr Turner, which was snubbed for the ADG.

I guess but Mr Turner is the only film to get nominated at the Oscars without a corresponding guild nom in the last 9 years I believe. It’ll be a very uphill climb for Emma now. Same for The Father.

Was that one actually a choice of the music supervisor, since it’s discussed in the film itself?

It was actually a personal choice of Emerald.

Julia Michels said in an interview a few year back and most scripts don’t have any music written into the script because of licensing issues and it’s usually blank when they reach the music supervisor. E.G, “Pocketful of Sunshine” in Easy A was “happy uptempo annoyingly catchy pop song” in the script.

I imagine PYW’s use of “Stars Are Blind” was something along the lines “nostalgic pop love song / guilty pleasure”.

If Emma. gets the BAFTA nom, I think it’s still happening.

Some things to point out here:

News of the World and Sound of Metal are the frontrunners for Sound, since they got 3 out of 3 possible nominations here.

Mank and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom underperforming.

Judas and the Black Messiah and Da 5 Bloods snubbed was a surprise, considering both movies feature gunfire and explosions.

No Mank in Foley is interesting. Might get snubbed.

That’s the Sound Editing branch. There was nothing special about the sound editing in Mank. CAS is a bigger deal.

Sound of Metal and News of the World are locked, since they performed the better in both Mixing and Editing guilds. This CAS nom for Mank also makes me confident it’s getting nominated.

Tenet was unsurprisingly snubbed, but it had two noms in the MPSE. I still think it’s happening. It would be nominated only in Editing if the categories weren’t merged.

I think the 5th spot will go to Greyhound.

Mank and Ma Rainey are still getting nominated in Sound because there are almost always at least three Best Picture nominees in Sound, so those two plus Chicago 7 will be the BP nominees in Sound. If News of the World gets a Best Picture nom then it’ll be four, which is the average.

I actually have a feeling that Tenet will be snubbed, and it’ll be one of those rare technical snubs like Black Panther missing Visual Effects that’s surprising but incredibly deserving.

    John's Best of 2020

    Best Picture: Soul
    Best Direction: The Midnight Sky
    Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman
    Best Actress: Viola Davis
    Best Supporting Actor: Delroy Lindo
    Best Supporting Actress: Amanda Seyfried
    Best Screenplay: Soul

    John's Best of 2021

    Best Picture: Nomadland
    Best Direction: Nomadland
    Best Actor: Lakeith Stanfield
    Best Actress: Frances McDormand
    Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya
    Best Supporting Actress: Dominique Fishback
Best Screenplay: Judas and the Black Messiah

There were only two BP nominees in 2017, which was the only time the Mixing and Editing categories had the same nominees. I can easily see only two BP nominees this year, and I think these will be Mank and News of the World.

Chicago 7 could happen too after this CAS nom, but I don’t think it’s strong enough. There’s no way Ma Rainey is happening after missing the CAS.

I think I’m in the minority that thinks Tenet deserves a Sound nom. I wasn’t too bothered by the messy sound mixing and it had great sound editing. It’s also important to note there’s always a VFX nominee nominated for Sound.
