So last year three of the eventual Oscar-nominees for costume design were snubbed for the period guild award, including the eventual Oscar-winner. To overcome a guild snub it helps when you’re already a perennial nominee which is why I can see Mark Bridges for News of the World and perhaps even Michael O’Connor for Ammonite make it in. I also think they can both get in at BAFTA. Judas and the Black Messiah and One Night in Miami both look like the typical period nominees at the guild that get easily passed over by the Academy branch.

News of the World will probably steal that 5th spot from PYW. Mark Bridges (News of the World’s costume designer) was able to be nominated for Joker and Inherent Vice without making CDG.

Bridges did get the guild nom for Inherent Vice. But it’s true that the CDG as a unit doesn’t seem as fond of him as the Academy; for both of his Oscar-winning projects he lost the guild award beforehand. It’s why I think he’ll still get the Oscar nod this year.

Emma, Mank, Ma Rainey and Mulan are locked.

How is Mulan a lock? It reminds me too much of Aladdin, which was discussed as a potential nominee early in the season but didn’t make much headway in the end beyond the fantasy guild category. I could see a repeat of all period nominees like last year.

Maybe not a lock, but I think it’s safe. It was nominated for the Critics Choice and it’ll probably be nominated for BAFTA as well. I think it’s more Maleficent, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast than Aladdin.

Yeah it’s a shame it has zero chance at the win lol.

Which four above the line predictions do you have? Picture, Director, Actress and Original Screenplay. I feel like all of those apart from Director have more or less been secure since the beginning of last month haha.

Do you have it in editing? The editing is quite flashy and apparently the editors branch like the editing of the film but I don’t know.

I have it in exactly those. Maybe I will look incredibly stupid but I just don’t see how you could think that it’s one of the best films of the year without also acknowledging the superb and inspired direction. It will also probably hit all the precursors including maybe a First Feature win at DGA and this hyper-stylized aesthetic isn’t the kind of Three-Billboards-ish thing that misses after a great precursor run.

It’s my 5 in Editing since I read about the tea regarding the editors loving it, Nomadland and The Father. But it’s definitely on the edge. I’m gonna sit BAFTA and ACE out for this one.

Isn’t it going Comedy at the Eddies? It’s sort of annoying because it won’t help with predictions, as it’ll automatically be nominated there. I could imagine BAFTA nominating it for editing but then see it miss with the Oscar branch, but it’s hard to be sure without having seen it (and its UK release being in limbo).

We stan Judas getting a Costume Design nom. I’m not sure if it makes the Oscars but it definetely has a chance.

Edit: actually I don’t think Judas was shortlisted so never mind.

News of the World will still make the Oscar lineup. It’s Mark Bridges. He was nominated for Joker last year. They love him.

I thought there was. Well, I guess it does still have a chance then.

Agreed. I think the 5th one will be Soul. Mank presentation wasn’t that impressive from what Mavity said and BP nominees are usually not nominated unless it has an actual shot at winning.

Does anyone has The Glorias as a NGNG prediction in Costume Design and Make Up ? Sandy Powell has 15 nominations, and the make up work was really good and showy in the movie.
