Reactions for Pixar’s Luca are out and they are indicating a lower tier effort from that studio. So I don’t think Pixar is winning it this year.
So what do you think is going to win. Here’s some contenders I will keep my eye on:
Apollo 10 1/2
Flee
Enchanto
Mitchells vs the Machines
Pinocchio
Wendell & Wild
Where is Anne Frank?

Wreck-It Ralph was way more acclaimed than Brave and yet Brave still won. Never underestimate the power of Pixar. Unless the other Disney movies flop too and a juggernaut comes (like Spiderverse beating sequel flops Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet), I’d bet on Luca taking it, or at least one of the Disney ones.

Apollo and Wendell are coming out in 2022 (unless plans change), no?
I think some of these are looking strong though:Luca

As far as I’m aware, they haven’t been pushed yet. But, that could change. I don’t think that the Academy would go for animated Linklater though.

According to this article they’re being pushed to 2022 or even later (as is Pinocchio btw) – who knows though.

If so, then they are absolutely getting nominated.
Keep in mind that there’s always european and/or asian animations.
1- Luca (Pixar)
2- Encanto (Disney)
3- Where is Anne Frank
4- Flee
5- Mitchells vs The Machines (Netflix)I’m skeptical about the last two, because Mitchell gives me The Lego Movie vibes in the sense of not holding enough prestige. Flee is just too artsy, although the acclaim could be enough to guarantee a nomination.
If Pinocchio and MFD gets ready on time, then the last two will get kicked out.

Encanto
Flee
The Mitchell’s vs the Machines
Luca
Looking for Anne FrankI agree that Flee has a really good shot, Luca could be switched out for Raya, but I found Raya kind of average. Looking for Anne Frank will be subject to its Cannes response, but the art style looks nice, and it seems they’re intent on releasing this year.

(Yes, really. MAKE IT HAPPEN OSCARS!)July 3, 2021 at 7:14 pm #1204328660Raya had a great weekend after it became free of charge on Disney Plus, according to Nielsen. Nice to see it get more love after initially underwhelming at the box office. Could it get nominated? It’s chances are better now than they were previously, but I think it still depends on Encanto’s reception.
Raya had insane legs at the box office similar to Croods 2, I also remember that Cinemark and other chains refused to show it because of the dual release
ReplyCopy URLJuly 3, 2021 at 7:39 pm #1204328672Luca might not have been as critically well-received as Soul, but the last time I saw people as obsessed with a Pixar movie as this one was Coco. Many people I know weren’t that big of a fan of Onwards, Toy Story 4 or Incredibles 2, but I haven’t seen anyone that didn’t love Luca. Just look at the fancams on Twitter, lol
