You can now make predictions for Animated Feature in our Oscars event.

Yay, but is there any word on the status of Where is Anne Frank? If it’s to be released this year, I feel it could be a very strong contender for the win.

I honestly don’t. It should be renamed to Best Animated Pixar Feature

Belle is now set to be released for 14 January 2022. Does that put it out of the running for this year?

No, that usually means they have a smaller qualifying screening in advance of a general commercial release date meant to coincide with awards attention.

Can someone explain to me – since I genuinely don’t understand – why everyone thinks Luca is a sure bet and going all the way (even leading the odds right now) where Raya is a flop that probably won’t get in? They were both released on Disney+ during peak pandemic so box office isn’t important. Raya had better reviews (better Metacritic and RT scores), had an A cinemascore and by all indications both seemed to do well on Disney+

I just don’t understand the reasoning that seems implied everywhere that Raya was a flop that people don’t like and Luca wasn’t? Is it just because Raya was released in a few theatres and people chose to watch on Disney+ instead (even then it topped the box office and outperformed expectations but did badly because many cinemas weren’t open at that time) or is there something else going on here?

I think it’s more that Raya has sort of faded from memory a bit. I honestly don’t even remember what it’s about–whereas if someone says Luca, I’d go “oh right, the one with the mermaid boys.”

Luca is being overestimated, but it’s still a Pixar movie and they are strong to get a nomination even if the movie is underwhelming.

Encanto will probably overshadow Raya as Disney’s main priority. I would only predict Raya if Encanto bombs completely, which isn’t out of question considering that the trailers were really bad and the movie sounds completely generic.

    1- Flee (Neon)
    2- Encanto (Disney)
    3- Luca (Pixar)
    4- Belle (GKIDS)
5- The Mitchells vs The Machines (Netflix)

I guess the studio thing makes sense and I get that Pixar almost always gets a film in if they have one so I am not really arguing that Luca won’t get in… I guess I was just shocked to see it leading the odds when I thought it was generally agreed to be one of Pixar’s weaker original films (probably if you asked a large enough group of people to rank all of pixar’s original, non sequel films it would as a whole end up third from the bottom ahead of the good dinosaur and cars)… But yeah I get the point of Encanto and Raya competing for the same spot, that does make sense.

Though Jan 14, The world premiere is July 15. It counts.

Trailers for animated films have been lacklustre lately, but the final film usually turns out a lot better. Not saying Encanto won’t be as middling as the trailers suggest, but it’s a trend.

I don’t know how much sway these awards have on the Academy, but here you go:
