Encanto opens with 68 on Metacritic. That’s too low. Critics are being polite in their reviews obviously, but the trailers were really bad
Neon has a golden opportunity to win Animated Feature with Flee here. The same with Netflix, but Mitchells might be too bonkers to win. Still going to predict Encanto for nowNovember 15, 2021 at 1:42 pm #1204580537
Most academy members don’t watch animated films, they just ask their kids which movie was their favorite and vote for it. I don’t think li’l Johnny will be hyped for Flee.November 22, 2021 at 9:04 am #1204594577
BELLE reportedly has some catchy songs, but it doesn’t seem like GKIDS is interested in running it for Best Original Song. I think they’re missing an opportunity here.
I agree with you here.
“U” or “A Million Miles Away” could snag a nom if they campaign it well.

I watched The Mitchells vs the Machines and I freaking loved it. Extremely funny and smartly written. I think this could very well win considering that there doesn’t seem to be much passion for Luca or Encanto. It’s very accessible, not too artsy, not too low profile, it’s an American animation, with a nice sub plot involving cinema that could appeal to voters if they watch. Frontrunner, and I hope critcs go all the way to support the movie so we don’t have another average default winner like Big Hero 6 and Brave.December 6, 2021 at 6:43 pm #1204632429
I have to watch Mitchells vs the Machines, but it’s looking like it could be a frontrunner. Luca and Encanto seem a bit more lowkey for Pixar and Disney respectively, and Pixar films becoming increasingly kiddish and being relegated to Disney+ makes me skeptical.December 8, 2021 at 10:11 am #1204637441

Mitchells vs the Machines is absolutely slaying these critics awards. Apart from NBR it has won everything so far.
I think we need to heavily consider it for a win at this point. I feel Netflix is going to win at some point and it’s main character being a cinephile doesn’t hurt either.December 11, 2021 at 8:35 am #1204643882
I fail to see why it wouldn’t win. It’s easily the best animated film this year and better than whatever Disney did this year (Avatar: The Last Airbender ripoff, Call Me By Your Name meets The Shape of Water, Coco 2.0).December 11, 2021 at 8:56 am #1204643914
I’m binge watching the animations.
I get why people like Raya and the Last Dragon. Gorgeous animation and striking visuals, great score, amazing fight sequences and great voice work by the three leads, but the story… Wasn’t it. Incredibly formulaic and basic mcguffin driven story with a repetitive, redudant and sometimes irresponsible message about “trust”. Not to mention the pacing and the lackluster world building.
It’s not as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind as I wanted it to be, but it is a fun and solid animation. 3/5 is a good rating, and I don’t get the 75 metacritic score. It’s worthy for the visuals only.December 11, 2021 at 9:06 am #1204643939
I loved Mitchells, but the colors made me dizzy that I almost want to turn it off.December 11, 2021 at 9:48 am #1204644034
Olivia Colman is an awards magnet. If MvM wins this category I’m crediting her.December 12, 2021 at 3:23 pm #1204647944
