    I cannot stand Olivia Colman!

Gaga and Ruth Negga deserved better!

And here we go again, with no black actress in Lead Actress.

I bet if Another Round had been released this year and had the increased voter turnout / expanded international membership it would’ve been more competitive for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay nominations.

One thing I won’t be underestimating is the international / foreign language features in more categories outside of BIF.

    2017:

    • Best Actress: Isabelle Huppert, Elle

    2019

    • Best Picture: Roma
    • Best Director:
      • Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
      • Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War
    • Best Actress: Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
    • Best Supporting Actress: Marina de Tavira, Roma
    • Best Original Screenplay: Roma
    • Best Sound Editing: Roma
    • Best Sound Mixing: Roma
    • Best Production Design: Roma
    • Best Cinematography:
      • Roma
      • Cold War
      • Never Look Away
    • Best Makeup & Hairstyling: Border

    2020:

    • Best Picture: Parasite
    • Best Director: Bong Joon-ho, Parasite
    • Best Actor: Antonio Banderas, Pain & Glory
    • Best Original Screenplay: Parasite
    • Best Animated Feature: I Lost My Body
    • Best Documentary Feature: Honeyland
    • Best Production Design: Parasite
    • Best Film Editing: Parasite

    2021:

    • Best Picture: Minari
    • Best Director:
      • Thomas Vinterberg, Another Round
      • Lee Isaac Chung, Minari
    • Best Actor: Steven Yeun, Minari
    • Best Supporting Actress: Youn Yuh-jung, Minari
    • Best Original Screenplay: Minari
    • Best Documentary Feature: Collective
    • Best Original Score: Minari
    • Best Original Song: The Life Ahead

    2022:

    • Best Picture: Drive My Car
    • Best Director: Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Drive My Car
    • Best Actress: Penelope Cruz, Parallel Mothers
    • Best Original Screenplay: The Worst Person in the World
    • Best Adapted Screenplay: Drive My Car
    • Best Animated Feature: Flee
    • Best Documentary Feature: Flee
    • Best Original Score: Parallel Mothers
    • Best Original Song: Encanto

so basically, there is always at least one slot in director for an international film (usually the category frontrunner a la Cuaron, Bong, Vinterberg, & Hamaguchi), as well as at least one nomination for a performance in a foreign language.

^^ Great summary! This international era of the Academy is truly exciting

I bet if Another Round had been released this year and had the increased voter turnout / expanded international membership it would’ve been more competitive for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay nominations.

It also needed Cannes. But yeah, I agree, in a normal year it would’ve been more easy for such an accessible movie to get more nominations. Especially for Mads 💔

The cinematography branch also appears to have no issue watching films in foreign languages.

If you go further back, Makeup has a pretty good track record with international films, too.

The fact that there’s zero overlap between Bafta and Oscar Best Actress nominees….

BAFTA has become irrelevant since it became performative.
