I thought it sort of strange that he didn’t show up for the Gotham Awards but Rooney Mara was there in person, presumably to accept on his behalf if he had won.

He was there too, lol, i think he sneak into the back door, it makes sense, someone so reclusive and shy like Mara wasn’t going to be there alone in an award show where Joaquin was the nominee.

C’mon C’mon will get some love, I’m sure of it. The passion for it is very strong and Mike Mills is an established filmmaker and a previous nominee. Screenplay at very least.

I mean…Hopkins just won his second and couldn’t be bothered to even show up. Frances doesn’t campaign much either. It could happen if the studio went hard on his behalf. Not necessarily expecting it to happen for C’mon C’mon (though i’ll happily stan all over the forum regardless) but at some point.

    FYC:

Actor: Joaquin Phoenix (C'mon C'mon), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick... Boom!)
Supporting Actress: Gaby Hoffman (C'mon C'mon), Ann Dowd (Mass), Ruth Negga (Passing)
Supporting Actor: Jason Isaacs (Mass), Robin de Jesús (Tick, Tick... Boom!)

Before West Side Story arrived I had C’mon C’mon as a filler nominee in Best Picture because it really reminded me of Her in its passion (I don’t think it’s win competitive for screenplay though) but I only have it in screenplay now.

Joaquin could get that 5th slot though if this race ends up being wide open for the nomination and Garfield and Dinklage end up falling short.

    FYC:

"The Good Fight" and "The Other Two" in all categories.

He could take some critics awards on the way to 5th place IF A24 could bother to get their screeners out on time.

Ah well. There’s always the Indie Spirits.

I think part of it is that adaptations of Shakespeare plays often have a somewhat limited audience, most of whom are probably already aware of the film, and part of it may be Frances’s general reluctance to campaign. Also, while she’s obviously one of our greatest actresses, A24 may sense some temporary Frances “burnout” on the general public’s behalf after her being fairly ubiquitous this past Oscar season.

Burnout for Frances shouldn’t have anything to do with Denzel and I don’t think it does.

Macbeth just appeared with major prizes at NBR and NYFCC, unlike some other contenders. I think these obituaries being written on its awards chances might be a tad premature.

Perhaps it is. But it still doesn’t change the fact that Frances has had zero buzz for this film since the film screened at NYFF and that neither of the major prizes it won at both those places were for either of its leads.

Apple/A24 bringing only BTL participants to rep The Tragedy of Macbeth at both the L.A. and NYC Deadline Contenders events certainly appears indicative of their strategy. As does the fact that the film played only two fall fests, one each in the US and UK. I bet the studios were genuinely surprised by Hunter’s NYFCC win.

Apple’s team are likely placing most of its cards on CODA rn and one can’t really blame them post-Gothams. A24 is now scrambling to build some key-nomination momentum for C’mon C’mon and Red Rocket, either of which could have really used an NYFCC mention.

    Supporting Actor: Moises Arias

With Smith and Cumberbatch each winning something (NBR, NYCC), we’ll see if remaining big critic awards will continue to award actors who are sure for nomination or will try to influence the race by backing up someone who isn’t in the conversation, like they tried with Ethan Hawke.

Perhaps it is. But it still doesn’t change the fact that Frances has had zero buzz for this film since the film screened at NYFF and that neither of the major prizes it won at both those places were for either of its leads.

Neither of those means its chances are dead, not to mention the former being quite a subjective notion anyways, especially before its released anywhere. And this is at least already proven to be admired enough to be rewarded over movies like Passing with “buzz” perhaps but no wins (not to say it’s necessarily dead yet, either, point being that that it’s too soon to tell in any case!).

It’s already doing fine compared with past late release breakers, like when The Father was deemed dead after not being seen enough to have a strong regional critics presence.

But does Denzel or Frances even need to pick up major critic wins? Probably not.
