Raves, particularly from NY critics, winning Volpi over contenders like Stewart or Colman, having been nominated before for foreign/Pedro work, Pedro just getting Antonio nominated in a crowded Actor field a few years ago, being SPC’s biggest push, being a world famous star on the campaign circuit with her husband (who will be making the rounds for BTR as well), and what seemed like beaming reactions from Parallel Mothers’ most recent LA screenings, there seems to be at least as many reasons to see her nomination happening as there are reasons to be skeptical — though most of the arguments against this happening has seemed based on “vibes” and skepticism of foreign language work as if the Academy hasn’t been trending towards more international nominees the past few years. I might drop her if she can’t win either NY/LA Critics but she has plenty going for her, particularly over many contenders in similar looking biopics without great reviews that can easily cancel out (many here seemed to misunderstand what I meant by a “slot” of campy biopic performances — if there are many of them competing for votes from a similar group of voters who would respond to it then yeah I don’t think that many are getting in at once).

The only big strike against Cruz is that Parallel Mothers wasn’t submitted for Best Foreign Language Film. If it was, she would be a locked nominee, and the likely favorite.

Marion Cotillard WON the Oscar when France didn’t submit La Vie En Rose.

Kidman — movie about Hollywood, beloved & acclaimed actress, popular character

Stewart — Diana & transformative & the new Academy breakthrough

Colman — new Academy fave, playing more of a “real” role than the others

Cruz — foreign film, international vote, Volpi cup, Almodovar direction

Gaga — potential Box Office success, strong campaign, the “method” actor

All of them have strong campaigns. Cruz not that much at first but Sony is apparently picking it up after the film wasnt submitted for international. So they need to overcome that and she will be seen.

    Good predictions.

I did forget about that — and it definitely must have caused a dent in SPC’s release strategy for the film. But it wouldn’t be the first time that the Academy went for a Pedro film even with something of a disconnect with the Spanish Academy (Talk to Her most notably), and Cruz still got nominated for Volver despite the film getting International/Foreign snubbed. As mentioned, Marion’s two nominations in French were without the International nom either. And it’ll still be Sony Pictures Classics’ biggest push in the bigger categories like Picture, Director, Screenplay, etc. (and you can’t underestimate their ability to microtarget the voters necessary to see their films as seen from The Father last year) — I don’t think it can necessarily go that far but I can definitely buy that being enough for a Cruz nom.

That’s definitely the angle of her campaign. I appreciate her dedication but some of her interviews are just beyond extra skskdk

But then again it’s Lady Gaga. Being extra is part of her brand

How Gaga doesn’t qualify as transformative, too? I mean if Kristen put a wig on and it’s transformative… Then so should be Gaga that gained weight, the films covers a big timeframe in which we’ll see Gaga go from young to old. The images we got from Gaga as older Patrizia shows some of the transformation she did.

    This tweet alone proves that.

Gaga’s transformation in that scene where she says “I didn’t know I married a monster” while crying is way more believable than the others. She looked so much like Patrizia

    Anticipate "Hold My hand".
