I really think Renee Zellweger would’ve been a BAFTA snub these days.

I think what’s so difficult to navigate here is the fact that there feels like a big crossover in support with each of these contenders. Stewart, Colman and Cruz are all in high brow arthouse movies and Kidman and Chastain are both in very American biopics and “transformational” roles. Being the Ricardos did well with actors but didn’t outside of them. None of these contenders are in Best Picture nominated films like McDormand and Mulligan were last year.

I’m going with Kidman for now because I expect her to win SAG but if she doesn’t this will be an interesting race.

I disagree. She won at the BIFAs over Jessie Buckley under a similar voting system and her performance had a lot of critical support.

Although if she were competing under the top 2 system I might agree because of how that system clearly favours those with more consensus in bigger contenders and the fact that the battle for those remaining four slots would have been tough if she missed (this is actually why I think Stewart missed at BAFTA, she probably would have made it in had all six slots being juried like last year).

It would be only appropriate for Anthony Hopkins to hand Oscar to Olivia Colman 🙂

We could still be headed for different winners at all the precursors. I wouldn’t count out Chastain for SAG, especially knowing now that her campaigning was this successful.

Olivia Colman is coming to pull a Luise Rainer/Glenda Jackson/Frances McDormand.

It’s so incredible for Stewart to be nominated from the acting branch and her peers when it seemed like she was being reprimanded for taking the role of Princess Diana due to the SAG snub. Goes to show how influencers and tiktokers shouldn’t have an influence on voting. In the end, talent always wins!

Well, Penelope Cruz joins Isabella Ajdani Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren and Liv Ullmann as actresses nominated twice for a performance not in the english language.

Who would have thought that being praised by Laura Dern, Salma Hayek, Robin Wright, Lupita Nyong’o and Julianne Moore in the week of Oscar voting was a good sign. Martin Scorsese praised Nightmare Alley. Bong Joon Ho and Gillian Anderson praised Flee. People do that for a reason.

Outside of Colman and Cruz this category is pretty meh, but I’m glad that Kristen got in at the end. Good for her career and for Neon. Still think Renate Reinsve would’ve been nominated if she had more push.
