A wise take.

Why? Acting has 20 nominees each year, screenwriters 10, others 5. And if I’m not wrong they invite every nominee to the branch. Actors are probably the largest group in the movie industry, so the largest representation in the branch seems only fair.

It makes it an actor-heavy award show (think of the high correlation between SAG and Oscars before the Academy started being more inclusive to technologists and to international members). If the Emmys were like this,Mare Of Easttown would have won over The Queen’s Gambit.

Are the Emmys much different when it comes to voters?

No. Actors make up the majority of ATAS.

As far as I read, Actors were the largest group but not in an overwhelming majority like the AMPAS. (I may be wrong though).

I second this. While it is natural since actors make up the largest group of Hollywood dwellers, it is also part the reasons why there have been so many insipid choices made (be it in acting categories or even Best Picture; what movie is popular with actors are more likely to be placed higher on more ballots). They need to be balanced by more directors, writers, and editors since their tastes are likely to be more varied.
February 12, 2022 at 6:39 am #1204798044It’s obviously the furthest thing from a done deal but something that’s worth mentioning about Colman’s film is that hers (and to an extent Cruz’s) are the only ones that have shown any kind of support outside the actors branch this season. It got into adapted screenplay, a random ADG nomination, it did decently on the BAFTA long-list for the type of film it is… Conversely Kidman’s film under-performed on the Oscar shortlists in the craft categories, Spencer was shut out by the guilds (outside of Greenwood) and The Eyes of Tammy Faye got nothing outside of Chastain and makeup and hair.
Of course that’s not to say that it’s impossible for Kidman, Stewart or even Chastain to win but having the support of the actors branch isn’t enough in a wide open field at the Oscars. If it were then McDormand would probably have lost last year to Day (whose film was also a biopic that was shut out at the guilds) or Kirby (who got in everywhere but was in a film that the industry didn’t really care about outside of her performance).

Yes. Each category there (except for series) is decided on by a different branch of the TV academy (actors vote for the acting winners, writers for the writing winners) whilst the whole AMPAS body votes for every award at the Oscars.

Which is why something like Bohemian Rhapsody wins Editing because most non-editors don’t understand what skillful editing is. The Emmys in that respect are much better.

I would love this approach at Oscars. The choices would probably more inspiring.

Except Bohemian Rhapsody won ACE Drama which was voted by editors. Perplexing, I agree.
